Guest Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 It was a shock to read in the BHW tonight, of the passing of a friend i made way back in my late teens. Ken Melvin, ex-editor of the RP Magazine, Chelsea fanatic, pigeon mad, chip shop owner, a natural comedian and general all round absolute nutter but salt of the earth bloke. I was introduced to Ken by Ian Smokie Gray when judging at the Old Comrades show, and although we'd just met, it was like we had been mates for years. After a cracking night out in Birmingham, including my first ever trip to a Balti House, Ken came into the breakfast room with a present for me. I had written many times in my RP column of my passion for Sunderland, and Ken presented me with a video of his beloved Chelsea FC's history, saying much to the delight of the 20 odd lads that were present, that this was a proper footy team for me to watch! He won a raffle the same weekend, and presented me with his prize. It was a Blue Pied Budgie in a cage. It squaked like a maniac on neat caffeine, and wouldn't shut up! He loved that! When i got home i sent him a NEHU transfer card for it! He used it as a bookmark. Ken gave up the RP job after a freind of his in Scotland had passed away. He moved to Scotland to take over the guys two fish and chip shops, and i believe, his pigeons. He was a real class man. Rest in peace old mate, tonight i am sad with your loss, but thankfull for being a small part in your life, and you shall always be a pleasant memory in mine. Ken Melvin, R.I.P.
