Can somebody explain the widowhood method and equipment please? Sorry but i typed in widowhood on search and it didnt come up with a definative answer. Thankyou in advance.

road training is probably best but it is time consuming/ expensive. this whole thing can be a bit confusing for new starters. my take is that you want your birds to be fit and you can do this by road work, excersize round the loft or a combination of both. the other thing is that taken up the road they learn (practice really) to orientate and 'home' whilst getting fit. if you train in the line of flight they get familiar with local landmarks and on raceday may get encouraged when realising they are closing on home. i don't train as much as i'd like as i havn't the time...for oldbirds i work them around loft pre season then 4 tosses up to 20 miles then daily excersize and race every week resting odd ones if i think they need to. occasionally i'll train to see if birds beat me home( if they do i think they're fit). the whole thing is to design a regieme that you can do and get your birds competitive. for ybs i don't really know yet but i'm beginning to feel that plenty of roadwork seems essential. ybs should fly for fun...so never 'flag' ybs.

sometimes for oldbirds fanciers use a homemade flag to stop birds landing on loft during excersize. thus extending the time flying. there can be problems however with birds flying onto nearby houses etc

its hard to train from blackpool as you have to drive 15miles before you start heading south then after driveing south then come back into the west to get em a decent route on av its around 60miles fora 40miles to get a 15mile toss!! it would be easier if there was a training waggon.

me and my dad would do 4 12mile tosses no more a week then knock down to 2 12mile tosses a week when racing starts

hi tango kid very   basicly these "systems" are,,,,,,

[1]" widowhood system" ,,,where the fancier just races the cock birds ,, these birds learn that their hen is awaiting on him on arrival from a race.

[2]" roundabout system",, where the fancier races both cocks and hens ,kept seperated but put together b4 going to the race ,

[3]" basket training " can mean getting the birds used to the basket i,e, learning them to eat and drink from within the basket

may just add ,, that sometimes basket training can be confused with" tossing " which is taking them ,by basket to a training point some miles away, then released to fly home,,   hope this helps
