whiteracer Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 I have a pair of late breds that paired up and want to start laying, should i open the nest boxes and encourage them to start laying or is it too early :-/ iam not worried about putting rings on them as they will not be raced next year?
Guest joshdonlan Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 If you want some young off them, its okay to let them lay, and they should be ok if the pair sit tight.

Guest joshdonlan Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 I will be pairing mid December this year. The winter doesnt bother the birds. You may loose the odd 1 but generally they are okay.
bird man of meath Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 have 2 14 days old and 2 2 day old doing fine keeping for stock will race them in 2 years time if i can
peterpau Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 I breed latebreds for the old hens national and train with youngbirds. If they are well and fit to breed it don't matter, but I would always put rings on.
peterpau Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 If they are only young I might put pot eggs under and let them sit them out first mind
whiteracer Posted November 30, 2008 Author Report Posted November 30, 2008 If they are only young I might put pot eggs under and let them sit them out first mind How long for mate? :-/
peterpau Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 They would sit for 20 days maybe but very young hens might not sit the full 18 days anyway, after this if they go down on eggs then let them and keep the young. I have a very old cock I have recently bought, should his hen lay and they are fertile, I will keep them, late bred or early for next year. I paid good money for old pigeons if I get two pair at any time I will be more than happy with that.
