Fitting Rings

I wonder can any one help me. How old are the bird when you fit the rings and how do you do it? And if i've bought birds and want to change thier rings to my rings can you get them off again without cutting them?

you cant change rings they are put on before the birds foot gets to big at around 7/12 days

rings are perminant on old birds and once the leg is grown wont come off , any birds you buy should be transfered to yourself and therefore your property , ringing ybs should be done between 6 to 8 days old

once the y/birds get past that age the foot is to big to re-move or put new rings on

Rings can only be removed by cutting and cannot be replaced. Rings need to be complete bands in order to compete in competition, racing etc.

To place a ring on the youngster must be between five and 8 days of age. To do this hold the youngster in one hand and hold the leg out behind. grip 3 forward facing toes gently hold together and slip ring over toes and ball of foot and let the rear toe slide up the leg. When ring reaches leg joint, gently prise the rear toe through the ring. Keep an eye on them for a few days to ensure the ring does not fall off.

you can down load  the transer forms via the rpra web site and its £1.50 per form  you can put 16 birds on a single form but must be from same lofts or you would need 2 send seperate forms

Thanks, i guessed Rollers would be differnt to "Proper Pigeons".

rollers are still registered to the breeder unless they transfers to you , so ineffect if you have no paperwork for there transferal then they are still the owners property the birds with have a prefix to which union they are affiliated to

explained in a nut shell  , but maybe a word worth mentioning , if you forget to ring a bird , or a few days late, these youngsters grow at an alarming rate,, in trying to ring these , a little vaseline ,or even butter , may help to gently force the ring on , but great care must be taken at this stage as if done wrong can maim the pigeon for life
