Does anyone who flies in the Rhondda Valley fed know what the problem was at newbury yesterday?  What should have been a quick spring turned out to be a marathon and more birds lost than any time this season for lots of people.  It was like the bermuda triangle, no info, no apparent reason just super slow results and a hell of a lot of missing in action.   ??)  :-/

we had two power cuts in newport yesterday dinner time no rain so there may have been a bit of thunder and lighting somewhere

The numbers lost were crazy tom, I don't normally get involved in post race inquisitions but surely there should be some questions asked regarding this lib because from what I got told the weather was bad at lib point and birds probably never got past that point?    Thanks for the info on the power cuts though Tom, a route to go down although I could find no record of them when tracking the weather.   :-/

I have a friend from Witney---close to Newbury he said they had had a high temperature last week which would probably result in thunder.

Thanks mate, I was tracking the weather systems all the way as I had a cracker of a result last week with a couple of my birds nearing the 2000 velocity, got me 7th fed which is the best I've managed this year and although I never expected anything like a repeat of that I really wanted to test something out and the race buggered that up for me as that bird is one of those AWOL.   :(

Does seem on the face of it though that it was a dry storm that did the damage along the line, gonna try and do a bit of digging to see if I can find out more though as I hate the not knowing bit.   :(

I never heard that mate?  Just tried to look it up on the news as well but couldn't find it, don't have a link to it do you?

STRIKE, got it,  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/8086821.stm   Was away from the race and I'm no geologist but know a man who is.  Off to ask some scientific questions.   ;)  ;D ;D   Thanks for that info by the way.

Just read it, it was still away from the flightpath of the lib and my sheds but hey you never know, anything's possible.  As said, I'm definately going to look into it as it would be interesting to see the take from a geologist on whether that kind of thing could affect a bird?  Sonic booms from a plane definately can so no reason to dismiss the earthquake theory.   Weather was drizzly at lib point at up time though so the strongest theory so far is the birds never even got past that point.   Just had another straggler in so fingers crossed.

at least two thirds of the birds missing at reading last night, birds homing from the north when they got home 1st five in club were spread over 45 mins (2hrs 40 - 3hrs 25 from 89 miles).

everyone was mystifyed but all agreed that all evidence was that a liberation would be no problem so theres no point in pointing fingers because whatever happened the organisers had taken all things into consideration,we have had great racing (may be to good)under Chris Butler and this is the time to get behind him (not one person said a critical word in the club house last night.)

Refering back to the earthquake theory, many stories have been recorded of animals and birds leaving the areas only for these things happen later, who knows? this is as good a reason as any other(there isnt any other) and hopefully our birds will return over the next few days.

I don't think anyone's pointing fingers in my case Neil, I'm not that's for sure, if I was I'd say so.  I did hear rumours that it was drizzling at the lib point with us and that it wasn't the right conditions but you put your faith in the man in charge on the day.   That said mate every one of us has a right to question why things go wrong otherwise we would never learn by any possible mistakes that have been made.   I'm still baffled as to what was the cause, the earthquake theory does hold to a degree for sure but it was not in the flightpath but I'm no expert on these things or how they could affect things coming towards it.

I have to agree that in our fed in particular we've had some awesome management when it comes to libs with fantastic calls and some great races, not lost a single bird until yesteday which is proof of that.   Anyway, let's wait and see how things pan out and fingers crossed the AWOL will get back to the sheds where they belong.  Only prob with me though is that I wanted to give the bird that give me 7th fed from lillers another go over the drink to see if he could improve but I ain't got that chance now.   :(   :'( :'(

west wales birds the same,, our club sent 75 birds and only 7 clocked,, I think there were 14 birds home last night,, we have had 5 from 9... they both went the same time I think 10am,, winner in our club is doing 668ypm.. The sky was empty of birds all day,, thunder in the air,,

I know lots who sent their brussels birds as it was a day earlier,, they are now not sending to brussels due to the returns,,

hope we all get them back..

i'm no expert on earthquakes but the birds will have sensed the pre shocks building up,it's a well known fact, and i'm sure it effects the earth's magnetic field.  we were at littlehampton yesterday but was away early so may be it was'nt as bad then because i got 100% returns although some had a bad race from there also.

i dont think good libs will stop birds getting lost, loses are down to several things..yesterday was a weird one like reims last week for us...i got 8 from 14 ..experiened birds still not home...and also some not home from lilliers 3 weeks a go.

weird!

2 hone today making it 5 out of 7 so not as bad as some,a few others have had a few in spite of the terrible weather

there were torential storms around yesterday, i cam back from Oxford via Swindon yesterday afternoon and the water was running down the road, the drains couldn't cope with it!

If the birds hit any of these sudden storms they would have gone down!

Anything could have happened mate, I'm just doing my normal post race inquisition as to what the F happened.  :-/   No blame apportioned just questions being asked as would most of us.    We've got a dry storm hitting us as we speak and that would have put the birds down or turned them in different direction who knows, I just hope all of us get most back.  Sad thing is we have a mid weeker which gave us less time to recover so numbers are going to be down which is a shame as I wanted to test one or two of the birds who did well over the drink to see if it wasn't a one off, I won't get that as soon as I wanted which is why I'm kinda more dissapointed than Strapper might be with his losses.   :(
