FoxesFan4Ever Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 Hi there, OK, I saw a thread on this point a few days ago but I can't find it now. I am having trouble getting some of my birds back in after they have been let out. I have come up with a system which I hope will suit which is to let them out at 8am and then again at 4pm. Today is the first day I tried it, so I took food off them last night to keep em hungry so they would come back and after they had been out a while I went down with the food and whistled them in and 10 came. A hardcore section of 5 are still out there an hour later on neighbours roof pecking away at something I assume is grit. I don't doubt they will go in eventually but if hunger wont keep them under control what will and would 12 hrs without food make them hungry enough or could the others be coming in just because its cold or they are fed up etc? Thanks for any and all help. Foxes Never Quit
steve d Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 You have something scaring them mate rats/cats ???? Pigeons will not spend nights on roof even if they are not hungry.
Okitsme Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 Hi Fox, I have been following a very good fanciers advice. One of the things he advised to get the pigeons back in to pop two peanuts in the nestbox before pigeons return. They will soon learn what is waiting for them when they get back. It has worked for me as I used to struggle getting them back in. Also if they dont come in then take the food away and dont feed them. The next day they will be first back and I am sure they sure they wont do it again. Hope this helps.
blaz Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 peanuts will definitely help birds get addicted to them .i now have 3 that land on me in garden as i always have a peanut in pocket for them.
Guest pigeon82 Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 once they are all in skip a days feeding out then let them out the following day when they come in give them an ounce no more no less i bet they start coming in quicker mine get an ounce every day and thats it mine ccan be flying around the house a couple shakes of the tin and they are all in i have no problems
Guest strapper Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 you maybe feeding too heavy at the night time feed? what i would suggest give them half feed at night ,or a lighter mix feed. it only takes one bad trapping bird to encourage a few more to his bad ways. find out who the bird is and make sure it isnt able to draw other birds up there again if these birds continue to come in late then do not let them be able to eat when they do! im sure next time out they will know they have to get in to feed!
pjc Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 those that don't come in when they are called don't get fed! they'll be first in next time but you have got to get your feeding right, right amount at the right time and you need to get them out of the habit of sitting on the roof either yours or youe neighbours or that'll be the first place they go on race day!

Foxes Never Quit as this is just the first day on your new system,, a little patience should do the trick,, pigeons are creatures of habit [be them good or bad ] but the ones staying out in the morning .. give them very little, when they do come in,,give a handfull of conditioner between them all when they come in,, and the ones out,, get none they should soon cotton on to this tit-bit and hopefully all eventually come in to-gether,, but your feeding must be right,, they can be hungry, without being starving ,, a few days can make a difference good luck
