Well Tom I admire your optimism. Time for pats on the back after the race. I hope the Officials have put the message over regarding the untrained and sick birds that are entered. I think we really have to crack down on birds with food in their crops. And while I'm at it, unstamped birds must be turned back. And that includes birds with unreadable stamps. Perhaps, if some of the culprits think they may have to send for their strays, they may try to do things in a better way.

Most of the Fanciers I have spoken to are pretty much nervious about what might happen. Let's hope it all goes well.

I was amazed last week when it was said that birds that had food in their crops at basketing would be turned away surely you guys feed your birds on the day of basketing and there will be food in their crops still when taken to the club,I realise that birds with YBS retain food in their crops but not all birds basketed in this way will have YBS.

Thats not what owen is getting at. Any bird has the potential to be a carrier of not just young bird sickness but of canker, worms, cocci etc. No bird should be allowed to be put into the basket with food in them as they WILL throw it up and you then have the issue that all the others in the basket will eat it passing on al-sorts of diseases. There is no need what so ever to feed birds later than midday on the day of basketing. I remove the food from my birds at 12 noon and they never have any corn in them. If everyone who sends the birds with corn in them stopped we would cut down the transmission of diseases a hell of a lot.

dont see why anyone would ship birds with corn in crop, will do them no good at all even if held over they are fed in basket so dont need it..

each to there own but if bird still had corn in its crop from lunch time on basket day it would not go.

would you work well on a full stomach????

I agree any bird COULD be a carrier but to turn birds away at basketing  because they have food in their crop must be wrong and I,m sure that the majority of members send them this way,I dont think any Union would uphold a clubs decision to turn away birds carrying food.

untill there is a rule stating as such i dont think anyone has the right to turn any bird away..wether it be the right thing or not...if it was for health reasons then thats a different matter.

The only reasons birds should be turned away are No wing stamp/or telephone ring and clearly displaying illnes, i.e one eye cold etc etc.

Easiest way to prevent transmission via any food is to fit grilles to the race baskets/crates so any food brought up will not be accesible by others!

you people who say the birds should have no food in their crop on friday basketing are crazy, i feed my birds the same time every day and they're hungry when the food is due, so if they're fed friday morning, saturday morning they'll be hungry. if you don't lib until dinner time and they have a tough race a lot may go down(no fuel in the tank) or if some go missing because of clashing/hawks they won't have the energy to return(and you wonder why so many never work back) . also i think keeping them hungry like that, is more likely to bring on sickness.

I think as PJC says floor grilles will prevent any food being eaten by other pigeons and then fanciers who decide to feed on the day of basketing have the choice!

Well lads, I have to say that I am disappointed in what you say. You know as well as I do that if birds are carrying food in their crops they will bring it up. You also know that if they bring it up the others will eat it.

In addition to the above you are well aware that young bird sickness is rife in a great many lofts. You also know that there are a lot of lofts who suffer with Paratyphoid. And canker, cocci and worms are common.

I have a microscope and I see an awful lot of this type of thing. And often, I see infections in birds from very dedicated Fanciers.

All I have pointed out is what I think is common sense. The Fanciers that have fed their birds have gained nothing because the birds sick it up. The Fanciers who have been responsible and not fed their birds have everything to loose.

And yes it would be a nice idea to fit mesh floors to the crates, but I can't see that being done. Can you?

In regard to the legalities of this, yes you are right, as yet we can not force the issue. But surely it would be worth all our whiles to try to eliminate a severe source of infection for our birds. Do you know, that we have not got to the stage where the crates are washed and distinfected after each use as yet. And how many Clubs use distinfectant in their drinkers?

Every year we are consigning large numbers of young pigeons to the roadsides and streets of our towns and cities. Then we complain about the losses. I am not saying that this one thing will eliminate the losses but it will at least make a positive contribution towards it.
