I have just started up again after a long break. I gave up due to a lack of time I had, and still have really, but I enjoy keeping the birds. I am already worried that I wont have the time look after both old birds and young birds next year. I much prefer old bird racing to young bird racing so I tought I might just race old birds and not bother with young.

I was wondering if anyone else out there races old birds only, but rather than breeding and training young birds, buys some young in at the end of the season from someone who has plenty left to settle and add to the following years team. I know by doing this you can never form your own family unless you get the young off the same lofts.

Obviously my other option is just keep stock birds and breed young and race them then move them on a the end of the season, which is probably a lot easier but not my preferred option.

Any comments would be appreciated.

i really only race oldbirds as i havn't time. i wouldn't buy at the end of season....but breed a few early and 'store' them until the comeback races the following year...then look to them as 2y/o. having said that its JMO and if you don't try it  you're way you'll never know :)

The satisfaction you would get from breeding your own YB' s off your own successful birds would surely make it worthwhile.

Good Idea Spin Cycle, I never thought of that, at least that way you can take you time with them and and not tied down daily to the work load of two teams racing in one season and you can look after the young at your leisure. Thanks

why not get your own young birds next year race them as young birds then the following year race them as old birds the following season and then only race the old bird season from then on
