FoxesFan4Ever Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Hi all, I am wondering what time of day the members here think is the best to take birds on training flights? The reason I ask is because the guy who gave me all my birds says I should take them in the afternoon but to be honest, although I haven't got in a routine yet due to being away, because I work nights I would prefer to basket them when I get home at 6am and take them straight off. Also, I think with liberation times in early morning it would be best to get them used to being out that time of day? So, from experience, can anyone tell me if my way would be wrong at all? Maybe there are early morning hazards I don't know about etc? Thanks in advance etc
pjc Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 you won't avoid hazards at any time of the day as you will see if you read Damians thread on the same subject. You just need to fit training in around your schedule. I do like to train mornings and then back home and in for there morning feed so they can go out again in the evening before the main feed. If you have early morning libs then they will also be used to flying at that time of day and the position of the sun etc so do what ever fits in with you and ignore the advice! Ask him why he sugests you go in the afternoon and when does he train his?
Guest Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 as early as possible for me.was up at 04.00 but the winds too strong up here today my mate trains at first light after his work he finishes nightshift at 03.30 quite often hes sitting at the lib piont waiting for the light to come in
FoxesFan4Ever Posted July 9, 2009 Author Report Posted July 9, 2009 Thanks for your response PJC. As far as the advice given, he does train in the afternoon, I have no doubts he is giving me his best advice as it works for him, he is a gent and a scholar and a genuine pigeon bloke. Doesn't mean it will work for me though does it so I will try it my way. I noticed you send yours out again in the evening? Just a plod round the houses and does it affect them in the morning when you train again? Knacker them out etc? Thanks again !!
pjc Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 they still fly for at least an hour in the evening and until they are upto 20m+ tosses they are excercised before they go training as well so somedays they are flying a total of 3hrs+ If they are healthy and fit its not a problem, they may have to fly a lot longer when racing starts. Once they are over 20m then if i'm training in the morning they won't go out for morning excercise but i have found i get far fewer training losses this way. An example of the reason happened yesterday, I took the 2nd batch for the first time which are housed in my partners loft, they havn't been out of the loft for 2 days due to the weather, tossed them, got home, sat watching for them and they came steaming down the road, didn't stop, just kept going straight, 20min later they came steaming back again, and again kept going! I want them straight home and in!
