PaulA_ Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 As a total newbie and someone that isn't particularly interested in keeping pigeons, my son has got it in his head that he wants some fantail pigeons!!!! The wife and I are not really wanting him to persue this as our garden isn't that big and I know that he'll probably, like most fads he has, lose interest within 6-8 months time ??) We certainly are not going to erect a big loft type thing but I don't mind opting for a dovecote!!!! I've seen a few online and could make one with my boys help to get him involved from the start, quite easily............................... http://www.deanbirders.co.uk/Building_The_Dovecote.htm how many birds could safely be kept in something like this and how safe would they be from things like cats and foxes? Thanks in advance.
Guest HighSpeedLofts Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 are they suitable for fantails? you want your son to beable to handle the birds to enjoy them get up close to them not stuck up a pole at the bottom of the garden buy a wee shed and convert that you miserable git!
Tony C Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 A pair can be kept in a rabbit hutch, fasten it against a wall or fence up of the ground.

PaulA_ Posted July 9, 2009 Author Report Posted July 9, 2009 A pair can be kept in a rabbit hutch, fasten it against a wall or fence up of the ground. Thank you but we have hedges surrounding our gardens so a hutch type thing would need to be mounted on the house. could both be used in conjuction with each other?

Guest Freebird Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Hi Paul. The hutch can be on legs around two feet high. Better in the hutch where the lad can get to know them better as a dovecote will be kinda inaccessable for him and the birds will get wild'ish. Let him get a pair of flying birds so he can watch them in the air and I'll bet he deosn't get fed up with them and it'll help keep him out of trouble. Hope all goes well and all the best.
retired Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 whats wrong with keeping pigeons in your attic loads of people do it You are suggesting someone who doesnt want a shed in there garden at present turn the top of there house into a pigeon coop. At very least try and give the bloke some sensible advice within the boundaries he has set his son - Maybe then we can gain a full family that appreciate pigeons as something other than what most think of them and also prove that we are a helpful bunch rather than P*** takers!!!
