Babybird Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 I went out to my birds this morning and the water was frozen solid. Seeing as this is my first winter with pigeons are there any tips anyone can share about getting through it and is there anything I can add to the water to prevent it freezing over. Thanks in advance

pjc Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 put the drinkers away from air vents and in a box with only 1 open side for access. Best to empty at night if you can but if you are unable to then try the above.

Guest Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 thought this thread was about an old alky that didnt make it thru the night ?? ....... have been threads about this before . some solutions were to set drinker bowl in a polystyrene moulding .heaters under drinkers etc . but i think the best solution is (if you have the time)s drinker out an hour after feeding ,and replace fresh again in the morning. andy.

Guest Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Thought it was a biography of your life ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D always wear about 4 layers when i go out Bob , and a big coat to keep my drink in the pockets?? (evil) andy.
OLDYELLOW Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Thanks guys, will do that, any other tips for me? could try heat pads , but as said try to keep drinker in a place where its not so cold in loft , or a very small amount of salt or a ping pong ball on top of your water
chickadee Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Cider vinegar in the water helps to stop the drinkers freezing but not on the extremely cold nights, I just empty mine, have a spare set or put them on a high shelve in the loft
Guest stb- Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 as bob said empty drinkers at night or add some glycerin to water, that is what is the base of anti freeze and does no harm. ;)
Babybird Posted November 9, 2009 Author Report Posted November 9, 2009 if it is cold enought in theior to freeze the water is it too cold for my birds? should I be insulating in some way, cutting down on the ventilation a little?
Guest stb- Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 nope mines have full wire fronts and never did them no harm as long as its dry your fine
