wings Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 THE FINAL INSPECTION The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. 'Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you ? Have you always turned the other cheek ? To My Church have you been true?' The soldier squared his shoulders and said, 'No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand. There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. 'Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell.'

Guest strapper Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 im no poet but here goes 8) 8) They gave their lives the gallent ones To protect the ones they left behind, All those familes who will never see again Their heroes..installed into their minds. each year its only right we should remember those that died the brave, All colours of different dress they dorn Salute them.. for the thousands they saved. Laid down on the holy cenotaph Flowers of all and every bloom, Sing herald the brave of each new war We remember them all in tune. The poppy signalled the heroes That died on the field that day, It now stands to remember those that died To make us free to live this way. So when ever you see a poppy Just remember what was given to you, Life to live as you want too! The thouands that died ..so brave and so true. we all cant be poets
Guest Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 Both poems are very moving . I liked the one that the Father of a soldier who had been killed read out on Remembrance Sunday on BBC1.

Guest strapper Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 a guy i know who came from my town was the 200th soldier to be killed. i was speaking to his father other week..who is a farmer. i dont think we can imagine what fear must be till we are on level circumstances as these soldiers. yet they go out day after day and face it.
