10 miles , hungry and in good weather [if thats poss lol]
I never train my ybs hungry to start with , if they get a bad one or get caught up with other trainers and get dragged away theres more chance of them going into another loft when hungry, give them a bit of feed few hours before trainer but not to much. ;) ;)

just  a few miles mine get 2 miles to start used to the basket then jump up in 5 mile tosses do not feed thought before toss in my opinion you want them back as soon as possible if it were like a race you want them trapped quick thats what i do no matter what distance training them as soon as theyre back straight in the loft asap but thats me

Hi Matt,

I am new to pigeons and I put my birds out on their first toss only a mile away from home which I did about three times (well, they beat me home on the third time), 5 miles until they beat me home again, 10, 15 then 20 increasing the distance each time.  Each time waited till they beat me home.  So far with no losses, let's just hope I have not jinxed myself by saying that ::)   Not only do I want 'pretty birds' but I would like to try and race them too as really keen after speaking to Owen last weekend.  I have 19 logans.

Don't forget to give them time to,  I think the word is, 'orientate' themselves.  I was told to give the birds some time to settle at the toss location, at least about 15 to 20 minutes.  Another hint told to me was NOT to release them too early in the morning as the BOP's are looking for easy targets for breakfast.

It seems to work for my birds, how true it is I am not sure, but if it aint broken, I ain't going to try and fix it!

Oh, and one more, I was also told to send them out hungry, by giving them half of their normal feed the day before, this was told to me after they sat on the roof of the house most of the day/evening after the first toss!  Sure as beans are beans, they came in straight to the sputnick on the second toss and have done ever since and thanks another pearl of wisdom,  mine now get fed one peanut each as a treat when they get in before being fed.

Hope all goes well for you Matt
