pjc Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 have they tested positive for canker or are you treating blind?
thomasd Posted August 24, 2009 Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 im treating blind but i was told to treat the every three weeks in racing
pjc Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 better to get tested first otherwise you may create other problems.
ch pied Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 its tricho 40 is what ive gotif the stuff you have is what i think it is , rondi 10% , if i was going to use it , min 5 day's for a pos thrico count . i woudent dream of using it on a 3 week cycle , resitaince build up is the prob .
Guest Owen Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 It is a very bad idea to treat for anything the birds do not have. You should have them tested regularly.

peterpau Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 It is a very bad idea to treat for anything the birds do not have. You should have them tested regularly. Not necessarily so me thinks. Treat on a four weekly cycle with different products is what is recommended in my vets book as a preventative.

Basically it is down to you, but before arriving at decison ask yourself why do I want to treat and only for 1 day when the label says 3 days? And what would be the likely consequence of doing that?
thomasd Posted August 25, 2009 Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 i do use cider vinger tues and garlic in the water thurday
Guest shadow Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 never used to treat for canker while racing unless showing signs of it
Guest Owen Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 I check droppings for a lot of people in our area and I am learning all the time. This is because I am able to follow up what happens after we have treated and after having found something. A couple of things I've learned is as follows:- powerful drugs dampen down the form of well birds. Cocci rises and falls depending on the stress that is in the birds. However, birds with high cocci levels do not win races. So overwork your birds and you could be causing problems. Hair worm is rarely cleared up with one treatment of any medication. It is common for it to take 3 treatments before the hairworm is finally out of them. So blind worming will not help you, because the chances are that the worms are still there. E-coli is always worse when the loft is damp and when the weather causes a damp attmosphere. Feeding heavy grain to young birds can result in retained food in the crop, which will end up with the bird being ill. When young birds retain food, it is important to get them to sick it up together with any filthy water that may be there. They should not be fed for 24 hours and after that only small amounts of very light mix. They can be back exercising in about a week. Using antibiotics on a regular basis will lead to weak birds because they usually end up with yeast and that can take weeks of treatment to shift. Very few checks are able to pick up canker so it is possible to be told that you have no canker problem when in fact your birds have got it. That is the same with hexamita. Birds are able to stay healthy easier when they are not treated. So it is best too only treat birds that have a problem because they retain their form better that way. And finally, where medication is used it is important to check the birds after the treatment to confirm that the problem is solved.
