I think yb's should have access to as much as they can eat in the early days [ie except just before they go out flying or they won't come back in!!],high protein to build muscle is best so I would feed about 75% beans,25% general good quality mix along side a good vitamin supplement like homoform.

look at the weather 2 id say, if its a headwind or sticky day, id give them a bit more

my yb,s are kept on the mix they were reared on ,then when they start ranging gradually move on to widowhood mix, never kept short , day of basketing theyget athird of the normal ration.

also try and feed for the predicted weather given for race day ,

reason alot of ybs go missing is there,s nothing left in the tank, should they go of coarse.

keepit simple and use common sense

i feed a heavy mix to rear them and then change the mix to a lighter one to race on....no expensive corn fed here...always on farm bought corn.

peanuts rice and one or two bits and pieces...bought from the shops.

as others have said basketing day keep it to a light food so its easily absobed into the body..peas take 24hrs to digest..beans 48hours.

ok my opinion ... on a fri morn i let my youngbirds have as much of whatever they like ... they will only take what they need .... second of all they will only take what they need when they in great form and it wont be much as they wont eat that much ... i never starve a bird by giving certain amount , not youngsters nor old birds ... you will soon see if your birds are in good shape and well great form as to how much they eat .... dont forget the drink aswell .... very important ....mikey
