adam owen Posted January 21, 2010 Author Report Posted January 21, 2010 i was told not to use brown grains eg beans maples ect asked whu and its something to do with poisens in them it damages liver ect :-/ :-/ :-/
Guest frank dooman Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 SO WHY IS THERE SO MUCH MAZE IN THE BREEDING MIXES, WHEN THE BIRDS JUST WAIST IT ?????????? :-/ if theres maize its not a breeding mix they dont have any in it
Guest IB Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Bucktons breeders has maize in it. Don't know about other breeding mixes, but I do know that mine leave maize and other stuff in it when they are feeding youngsters. Inclined to think much same way as Blaz that maize's shape can't be too easy to get back up, but you read in BHW and elsewhere, e.g. Vet's Tips, parents are said to know that it is an inferior grain for raising youngsters, and yes, inclined to think that too, otherwise they'd be eating it and feeding it. Note what is said about pulses, brown-skinned grain, but the only warning I have ever seen published is on the amount of maples fed, by Gordon Chalmers, who has it from a nutritionist friend that maples contains harmful substances that will disrupt bird's digestion if fed too much. I think that could be said about almost anything though, if there is too much of it? I am mixing my own this year. Fed up with waste. Base will still be a commercial mixture though, beans, maples & tares, Bucktons Hi Speed, with additional straights added, depending on what the birds are doing, e.g. maize for additional carbs when the birds are racing.
holmsidelofts Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 It depends on how you feed them. If birds have corn in front of them all the time then they will choose what they want, If you feed small amounts on a regular basis they tend to eat everything including maize. I used to hopper feed my stockbirds, i had grid floors in there. after 6 months i took the grids up to clean out and probably had 2 - 3 20kg bags of corn on the floor. they will always go with what they like. I stopped hopper feeding, feed more regular and never had an issue.

I have always wondered why this is. Do we require higher protein mixes because of the climate or is this just a notion the UK fancier has in his head?
dwh Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 ;D ;D ;D Neither do i but think some maize is cheaper then the maple peas etc maybe thats why they add it . I certainly know that when mine rear young birds they go for the protein first and aint much interested in maize agree with you on that one
