is there any importance for maize in a breeding mixture as the birds always seem to leave it :-/

I NEVER GIVE ANY WHEN BREEDING ,   ;)

i dont use maize when breeding.as maize is a carbohydrate it is also sharp one end.it is not easy for the parents to regurgitate .i think it could cause canker with it being regurgitated and scratching the parents throat.this is just my view

maize is good for them in cold weather as it generates body heat

Neither do i  but think some maize is cheaper then the maple peas etc maybe thats why they add it .

I certainly know that when mine rear young birds they go for the protein first and aint much interested in maize
