Jacobasmith Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Hi, A few months ago a good freind of mine gave me 8 racing pigeons, i kept them in for 10 days (as told) then i let them out. 1 came back about 24 hours after i let them all out. 15 days ago i got another 2 pigeons, and today i let them out this morning with the 1st pigeon, the first pigeon is back, but not the other two. What am i doing wrong?
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 your not breaking them to your loft. 10 days is way too few. You need a settling cage also.
Guest frank dooman Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 how old were they?and do you have any older birds flying out?
Guest Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 your not breaking them to your loft. 10 days is way too few. You need a settling cage also. not if done correctly Josh. if more details could be given , perhaps a better response will come . andy.

pjc Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 you need to make sure they are bonded to you and the loft and control them through there stomachs!
Guest frank dooman Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 when you get y/birds from some one try and get them under 40 days old build a homming cage to put on the landing board and lift the birds into it every day if necesary after 4/5 days they will go into it them self leave them going in and out for 3/4 weeks then just remove the cage that should do the job but remember we all loose some off the top of the loft y/birds are allways better bred in your own loft hope this helps
wings Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 I let my young birds onto the landing board before they can fly so that they can get used to there surroundings, and a good tip is from the belly to the brain in other words before you let them on to the board make sure they are realy hungry you may even want to starve them for 36 hours, i always whistle when i feed them so they now when feed time is, don't loose hope it will come together remember the bit from the belly to the brain. Hope this helps some for the future.
wings Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Sorry forgot to add if the young are that bit older dwmp ther wings down so they cannot fly to strongly
gulkie Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Had the two that are missing in for 15 days, i let them out today with a slightly older bird who has comeback after a training toss before(they only bird i have now) When i got these two they very young (only about 8 inches tall) I am gutted, i am starting to feel like i am useless at this dont be gutted just yet ,as the other lads have said get a breaking cage to let them see all their surroundings, cage train them for about 2 weeks ,then take the cage away ,but keeping them that bit hungry, not starving just in case they do stay out. sounds like the young you got [with 8" tails were to old when u got them.any young u get in the future ask if u can have them at 25 days old,and u will break them easly .good luck m8
Guest joe muzz Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 try avd get birds from the nest that cant fly and wean them to the loft still a bit cold for breading try and get y/b bread say in feb thay will be beter .
THE FIFER Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 make sure birds have had a good view of your area, via cage etc before letting out
Guest spin cycle Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 i enclose the sputnik with a temporary aviary that only gets fully taken away once training starts. when the weather is better you're welcome to come over and see...or i'll take some pics and post ....if its any comfort i lost alot of my ybs off the loft when i started, but you soon learn
Guest youngboy Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 yes i agree you should have kept them in for longer!! but dont worry these things happen! especially with some yb when or if there rannging! just taim them to eating out of your hand thats wat i do and i dont have problems with that anymore!!! yes well sed pjc leave them out hungry and you shouldn have any problems then!! good luck!
Jacobasmith Posted January 5, 2010 Author Report Posted January 5, 2010 The worst part is, i feel like its my fault and i feel really bad as these birds were given to me for free. So that is seven lovely racers and two beautiful tumblers gone. :'( I wasnt going to race these birds anyway (they were too old to put rings on them.) i intended to breed off of these ones, meanwhile taking the ones i wasnt using to breed, off for short training tosses. Well all i can say is, i need to learn from my mystakes. Is there any chance that they might take untill the next morning back? (i hope so)
Guest youngboy Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 oh there is always a chance of that! shure 1 day i got and advanced young bird and he got out on me 10 mins after i got him! it tokk me 5 days to get him back!! i was very lucky i often got yb that were advanced and flew away but its head wreckin but ya gota move on just leave out the oder birds and he might bring the others back if they see him in a distance!
chicken head Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Also, if I may suggest, the lack of a colony of birds can be off putting for just a couple. They may squabble, but they are a flock bird really. I'd break them when they've had a nest and are driving to nest again. All the best with them and keep the faith, it is very rewarding when you get them going.
