how long do u put ur hens in wi cocks b4 basketing them for race nxt day and on return from race ? ;) thx kev43

Zero, never show them before just bowl, Have found this works better as the cocks dont get as wound up as if they were shown the hen. Im assuming you are talking about widowhood and not roundabout.

Do members shut the hens in their boxes so that the cocks can not tread them, or do they allow contact between the cock and hen?

we are just learning the ins and outs of widowhood Brian and from the advice we have been given we leave the hens in with the cocks for a few minutes then take the cocks out and in to a basket, it seems to be doing well this way as the cocks can beat the hens from the samepoint by at least 10 minutes  [ hens go at a different time from cocks and the hens we use with the cocks are ones that do not go anywhere

I have had success with my widowhood team, however on basketing night I just turn over the bowls and let the hens through, I don,t care if they tread :-/ would like to hear others views on my way :-/

I would not dream of showing the hen before basketing and never ever before they are trained. Too much hen ruins a cock. The best idea with the cocks is to try to keep them calm. I walk in with the nest bowls piled up in my hand, and that is enough.

If the cocks get to see the hen too much they will not exercise properly and they are not likely to stay with it for the whole programme.

If you decide to have the hen waiting for the cock on his return from a race, 5 minutes is more than enough time for them to be together. And only then, if you are sure that the hen has not paired to another hen. It is important to feed the cock after the hen is taken out, not before. And then only a light diet to tide him over before he gets his proper feed at the normal time.

One of the best ways to tell if you are getting it right is to take notice of how the cock behaves on his return from a race. If they swing around and clap about before they drop, you have got it wrong. The cocks should dive for the loft without messing about before hand. Nothing else will do.
