Guest cosmic dave Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 I take the food out at night and every morning measure out fresh food. I leave it in the loft all day and by evening it has all just about gone, I have cut down the amount and this has stopped them picking only the food they enjoy. Is it OK to leave the food hopper in all day or should it be removed after a hour or two ? :-/
fletch Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 if the pigeons are under control, they come and go when you want to then yes its ok but if they play about when you want them to come in then no, but really depends if you on about old birds that are racing, young birds or just birds that are for your fun and enjoyment or stock with young
Guest cosmic dave Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 All young birds, I don't feed them before they go out but to be honest they wont come back in until they are ready and totally ignore me
Guest Mav Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 I did the same Cosmic, But i spoke to a good man on here about it and its not the way to do it, No wonder they sat on the roof laughing at me. They had a full belly all day long and thought this is the life. An ounce and a bit per day is what i am doing now. They land on the roof after a fly and then i rattle the food tub and call them down and there in straight in, No messing.

fletch Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 All young birds, I don't feed them before they go out but to be honest they wont come back in until they are ready and totally ignore me then the answer to your question is no, i would feed them when you get them in we always feed a rough estimate to 5 young birds to the plastic feeding cups that you use to feed with the birds in there boxes, feed them in the hooper then when 3 or 4 have come away amnd gone for a drink take the food away, at first they wont eat it all quick enough but when they get used to it and by the time 3/4 come away for water there wont be a lot left, as some young birds will stay eating all day and they will be in control of you when they not hungry and this is not the idea get them under your control
OLDYELLOW Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 i find easiest feeding method is to use an empty pickstone in middle of floor , (1) they compete for food which i like (2) they eat all the mix rather than picking at it (3) you can see when to take food away when last 3 / 4 are picking od bits up then time for food to go
Guest pigeon82 Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 my birds dont get any food until theyve had their exercise when they come in they get 1 ounce each of food ant thats it now as getting them ready for their training so they usually come in when you want them to not when they feel like it best way they know the food is always there but i usualy put a few peanuts inside the trap so whoever is first gets the peanuts you tend to see them rush for the nuts
Guest Mav Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 Ok I will cut the food down to about an 1 oz each and see how that goes, Did you get your whites Mav ? I have some coming next week Give it a try!, and see if it works, no harm done. (I know i keep saying i was told, But just like you i take notice of what other folk on here say as i am a novice to and this is also my first year.) Was told i can feed twice a day, 1/2 ounce each time if it suited me. Also to mark a plastic beaker with a line in ounce measurements. Dont starve them but make them pleased to see you when you go into the loft. I also have my whites, that i won in an auction coming next week. (hopefully if there weaned), Going to meet the gentleman that bread them too).

Nuts For human consumption as i believe wild nuts can be old and sometimes mouldy.

Yes red skin peanuts for human consumption from supermarket or health shops mate, not for wild bird use, as they are legally allowed to carry some ammount of mould growth. :-)
