one of my hens has just laid the first of her second round of eggs on the floor, she has left her nest box(took ybs away about 6 days ago)and prefers the floor.

as she is due to lay her 2nd egg tomorrow if i lock her in the nest box with the 1st egg when she lays the 2nd will she take to the box again and sit both the eggs???

dont really want her on the floor but if theres a chance i could loose this round of eggs by forcing her ill leave her.

  any advise please???

somebody else had same prob a couple of days ago. If you shut her in the box with a fresh clean bowl and some nest material she should be fine.

thanks phil.

i was wondering if ive left the ybs in with them for too long, and they didnt want to go back to the nest box.

ill give it  a try and see what happens,

  thanks.

yes joe61, ive had that trouble before. thats why i didnt want them on the floor as it causes a lot of unnecessary fighting. plus the ybs are open to attack by other cocks when they are left unattended by parents.

when your pigeons expect the next round always put a second nest bowl in the box, its not rocket science, just forward planning

right... so when do i put the nest bowl in???how old are the first ybs when the hen lays again???

In my opinion the hen isnt that keen on her box , if she laid on the floor.Put the egg she laid in a bowl with shavings or nest felt ( no straw or nesting material ), and leave it exactly where she laid. After she lays her second egg ( which should be with the first egg )then if you wait until its dark you can move her and the bowl a few inches. You can do this every night until you have the bowl where you want it.Alternatively you can cover her head with your hand and move the bowl a few inches every day. I have moved pairs on eggs the whole length of the loft into  using this method.

Leave her where she is if you can, put an open box over her or a milk crate works, if you put her in a nest box and she panicks she may damage the eggs :-/

We had one lay on the aviary floor, we moved the chicks into a nest box at six days old when we rung them, the parents soon found them :)

yes ive did this , worked perfect , the bird laid allmost in the middle of the floor , next to the drinker , so i moved both [drinker and bowl] to the corner bit by bit  :), after they were sitting tighter , i moved the drinker back  :)

Recently I have seen on 2 seperate videos where top fanciers say that birds reared on floor are better birds the theory is that they find food quicker and wean with less stress because they are already near food and can often times get old cocks to feed them when parents wont so they stay better during the wean

ive had at various times hens that would only lay on the floor,at 1st id put the eggs in bowls and let em rear, then the year after if i was using the hen again id put bowls down but cover them by putting a piece of wood leaning on 2 side  of loft to create privacy thus keeping hen happy....

some one has given you some duff info as that is natural they always have two young being fed while sitting another nest your just wasting the birds energy as they wiil go through the driving procees quicker to lay more eggs again
