Guest IB Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 A hen that is 'eggy' is quite easy to spot, the rump is slightly raised giving the impression of a slight hump between the bird's back and tail. Its even more exaggerated just after she lays. The other sign is the vents, two bones you can feel at the rear, which are immediately behind the keel. These normally lie together (closed) but as the hen reaches her date to lay, they swing open, gradually becoming wider and wider apart till there's room enough for an egg to pass between them. After the second egg is laid, they start to close again, takes about 10 days beginning to end (close - open - close). Can't go by treading alone. Hens will tread hens, hens will tread cocks, cocks will tread hens, and cocks will tread cocks.

Enjoy.
