Guest Hjaltland Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Sorry to hear you've lost these two youngsters. Micko were you sure the chicks were dead? because it takes a bit of time for the chicks to appear once chipping starts. If in fact they were dead then there may be some background health problem with the parents, do you have any other pigeons? are they hatching youngsters OK? Did the eggs get chilled by parents being absent from the nest? These are some points you can consider. All the best with your pigeons.

Merlin Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Leave well enough alone ,provide fresh nesting material if you wish to breed again,no nest felts,on occassions chicks will die at hatching ,if shell is too thick, calcium etc,or if chicks have any weakness, the effort to chip through egg can prove fatal, did chicks actually emerge from shells ? but definitely no black nest felts if breeding again.
Guest Hjaltland Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 I didnt know that about the nest felts.. thks for that.
micko and jack Posted June 11, 2008 Author Report Posted June 11, 2008 i had 4 other chicks hatched yesterday all the nesting material is the same felt is from the pigeon suppliers and is like carpet underlay and tabcoo stalks micko
just ask me Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 i had 4 other chicks hatched yesterday all the nesting material is the same felt is from the pigeon suppliers and is like carpet underlay and tabcoo stalks micko i think the problem was with the black ones and not the brown ones as far as i know could be wrong
Guest j.bamling Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 my friend just used carpet left overs he places his nest bowl upside down and stanley knifes round it then turns his bowl the right way and places the carpet felt in out of his first 16 to hatch 12 died !!!!!!!!!!!!!! took all the felts out 3 rounds later not one dead !!!!!!!!
Guest shadow Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 sounds like the ones that died were weaklings if the others have hatched ok
pault Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 Micko ~ I know lots of fanciers both here and abroad have had chicks die from chipping to 4 days old using nest felts i would advise just use your clay nest bowls with a handfull of shavings and some straw and see what happens !!! the black nest felts in particular have been deadly this year !!! i have used black nest felts this year and had no trouble but it do take them out of the bags they come in and get them ready in the bowls about a month before i put them in the loft so maybe this lets them breath abit before they go int the lofts just a thought i also wrap my nest bowl in paper then put the nest felts over that cheers paul
little sam Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 my friend just used carpet left overs he places his nest bowl upside down and stanley knifes round it then turns his bowl the right way and places the carpet felt in out of his first 16 to hatch 12 died !!!!!!!!!!!!!! took all the felts out 3 rounds later not one dead !!!!!!!! THATS BECAUSE CARPET HAS A CHEMICAL IN IT THAT IS DEADLY TO YOUNG PIGEONS (HE IS ALSO LUCKY HIS OLDUNS HAVENT GONE OUT OF CONDITION OR EVEN ILL DUE TO THIS) ALSO THE CHEMICAL THATS IN CARPET IS WHATS BEEN GETTING INTO NEST FELTS AND KILLING YOUNGSTERS
