westy pigeons are like any other animals or pet you give it a flick or a kick, they certaintly will think twice about coming to you, on race day and you are nice to your birds they will want to come home, give it a flick and it could be the first bird to the loft, but when it comes home it will just fly around scared to come down and that could be your combine winner, treat them nice and they will come home to the home and owner they love, im afraid your so called pigeon friends have said that because your a potential threat to them,  you do what you think is right, nice people get nice rewards, i pick mine up from 7 days old and give a stroke under the chin, about 3 times a day

thanks ray,

much appreciated,

Do you really think that is the reason why? a threat?

how sad you must be to say that to any member or newcomer, never mind a 14 yr old kid.

Well, from distant memories from trips to ze zoo, reckon Westy's froat will be kinda sore during racing season.

David Attenborough offers this advice and will give you a call:

Penguins don't heed none of yer whistles and rattlin corn; its a kinda 'honk-honk' call and flick-of-the-wrist swishy-swish of ze fish-kettle to get these fellas in.

Here's one commin now : lights, camera ... and ........ACTION.    ;D

Speakinsz of virgins and penguins : read an article in Friday's Scotsman which I meant to post, about gay male penguins in a zoo. Zoo folks thought they'd sort these fellas oot by bringing in females from another country's zoo ..

didn't work ...  the males frantic antics frightened the females and they ran for cover ...  ;D

Hmm, much the same effect as meself!!!  ;D ;D   :B

SOME BRILLIANT COMMENTS ON THIS POSTING ABOUT CONTROL, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO FLICK A SQUEAKERS HEAD TO SHOW THEM WHOS BOSS, MY PIGEONS WERE VERY NERVOUSE WHEN GIFTED TO ME BY A RETIRED FANCIER BUT WITH PATIENCE THEY NOW FLY ALL OVER ME IN AND OUTSIDE THE LOFT LOOKING FOR THEIR FAVOURITE TITBITS,  SOMEBODY ONCE TOLD ME, GIVE YOUR PUPPY A KICK TO SHOW HIM WHOS BOSS, WHAT F-CK--G RUBBISH,WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND (AS THE SAYING GOES)

                                    KEV  >:( >:(

i do not know about flicking the young bird in the nest but i try to get the associated with me and no that i bare food when i enter the loft when still in the nest.I constantly call them when feeding!I also handle them after ringing so they get used to the smells ect. When they start feather is when i play with them i dont flick them i just might softly hold there beak and let go a couple of times as they try and fight me!i would never flick them however

As has been said, flicking a squab is absolutely wrong and I believe could even make the bird shy and/or cowardly when older.  The only real control you have with ybs is with the feed, they will always come to it.. Get them use to you having feed when they are young and you will always have tame and gentle birds.  Just my thoughts anyway.

make sure you ring them young before there legs get too fat, i left one a bit too big and must of squeezed him when ringing and he has never forgotten that discomfort no matter how nice i had been before and have been since he still doesnt like me, and as a result he is always last to come in hardest to catch ect and gererally a bit scatty when im in the loft, which doesnt help with control, so make sure you make every experiance with humans as positive as possible from day 1

ps iv also noticed that the squeakers i have in nest boxes that are just above my eye level are much less tame even tho there parents are the tamest pair in the loft, i can only put this down to the fact that they dont see me when i clean out ect and only see me when i handle them, so must associate people only with being picked up  (this year iv moved the parents down into a lower nest box to see if i get tamer youngens)

and give that fancier a flick from me !!  ;) i think hes just trying to eliminate the competition and you can garentee he would be the 1st to offer advice/condolencies when on race day when thanx to following his advice your birds fly round and round the loft and wont come in !

when you handle a yb , [any age bird for that matter]  tickle the hard boney bit under the eye quietly for a few mins ,,,,see how quiet that bird becomes :) :) :)

i always do that they just relax in your hand with there eyes shut.
