ray Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 westy pigeons are like any other animals or pet you give it a flick or a kick, they certaintly will think twice about coming to you, on race day and you are nice to your birds they will want to come home, give it a flick and it could be the first bird to the loft, but when it comes home it will just fly around scared to come down and that could be your combine winner, treat them nice and they will come home to the home and owner they love, im afraid your so called pigeon friends have said that because your a potential threat to them, you do what you think is right, nice people get nice rewards, i pick mine up from 7 days old and give a stroke under the chin, about 3 times a day
Guest Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 One thing I was told was never to pick up a baby pigeon if you have cold hands as they will never trust you if you do.

carl Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 when i go down the club for the first time in a few weeks, cant wait to ask the winner, can i flick his birds, & you watch just to see if im doing it right! fancy pulling young westy to one side & telling him that, never heard such BULL ****! I agree snowy the cheak of it treating young westy like that,WHY NOT flick him see if he likes it,im sure the birds wont like it. only kidding about the flicking a fellow member bit but come on,flicking your birds
carl Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 heres a tip, when youngbirds are featherd and parents are not sitting over them so much, place all the bowls with the youngbirds outside for a few mins, maybe when you clean the loft out place them outside, this gives them a good look around from an early age.
Guest WINGS 04 Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 just give the birds as much time as you can and try not to frighten them by moving to fast in the loftand try to get them to think that when you are there they will get something eat
snowy Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 thanks all, the young one westy reared, late last year, we started handling him from 10 days old in & out the loft, before he could even fly, we took him down the bottom of garden & watched him run back to the loft, he used to fly on our shoulders all the time looking for a nut, it made me so mad when westy told me that! > even worse, he waited untill westy was on his own, (the secretary takes westy & the secretary went to the bar & then this so called winner of 2005 told westy) i would love to win any one race this year! & say to that scared to lose fancier "it must have been that flicking it worked a treat" "thanks for telling us that tip" just to see his face.
westburylofts Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 GOOD ON YA SNOWY BEST WAY MATE RAY
Guest Silverwings Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 control , westy when young pigeons are on the outside with corn on their inside ,you will not have control over them ! allways remember " hunger fetches the wolf out of the woods " never deny young pigeons food but teach them that there is a time and place for them to get it ? and that ' YOU ' are their only access to it , this way you will hold the aces and control them.......ray
symbro Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 everytime i feed my birds i put them in the avairy (landing board) and use my feeding can to call them in. also every once in awhile (after my floors are super clean) i feed the birds at my feet and let the brave ones eat out of my hand. while the feed around my feet i move my hands more and more so the get used to the idea of my hands moving while they eat.
