basket training youingsters

think the people your racing against would also love you doing this, pigeons will feel so safe wont leave the crate  :-/ :-/ :-/ ;D ;D ;D :-/ :-/

Wiley you could have a good point there .I heard one of the convoyers say the worst thing about the job is scaring youngsters out of the crates.Could it be the youngsters that feel safe in the crate dont want to get out of it?I think another good point is the searching for water .More like teaching a pigeon to survive no matter what rather than just in a basket.

:o well me y/bs have been basket trained i do like them to get used to it early but one thing i dont do is feed them in the crate  :-/ as once i have had them in the basket i will release them as feed times in the loft not in the basket, :-/ just the way i do it.SPECK :X

i think it would be unfair to the pigeon not to basket train them

they need to know where the water is

it would be like not training them and just sending them to the 1st race

i think dehydration is a main cause ov any young pigeon going down

i forgot to do it last year coz dad passed away and i entered my nine and saw 5 of them drink out thee basket, and 7 came home i no some one whe never trains them,

young birds spend plenty nights in a basket long before first race, and are usualy put in the basket when old birds are racing as they do not get out that day

I like that idea i plan to put mine in Sat morn (my 1st old bird race) till there night feed. What would members say is a good age?

Im trying Chris Balson's tip about Youngsters basket this year, Get old basket, put sawdust and straws in the basket, ope flap 24/7 in the young birds lofts til youngsters on the perches. it worked well for Chris Balson...

In the dark, my ybs are sleeping in the basket :) they'll feel more safer...

How's this idea panning out Craig let us know when you start trainig them how fast they get out or are they just a little bit too secure

I pen train my show birds as young as possible and it's only the same as basket training,I play with them around the pens first, handle them exactly the same as a judge would just for a few seconds most nights, give them the odd peanut in the show pens...they build their confidence and learn the show pen is a good place to be.It's all about making the whole experience of being in a basket or pen as stress free as possible, stress uses up energy, more stress the less energy they will have for the race or show.....don't forget it is in your own interest to give them the best chance possible at a race/show if you want to do well and every little thing you can get right with your pigeons increases those chances.Show wise many judges walk straight past birds which are flapping about in pens....won't even look at them, seen many a nice bird kicked out for not been pen trained.I know it's time consuming but you only get out what you put in

Still didnt drink in race basket Tammy.  ;D

Any convoyers care to comment on their experiences with YBs drinking on the transporter?

feed them first in the loft with no water available,, basket them ,, give them a half hour or so,, then let them see and hear  the water pouring into the drinkers , theyll soon drink then  :)
