fireangel Posted July 29, 2007 Report Posted July 29, 2007 I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to preserve their eggs. Say you want to put a pair together and have no fosters, but you don't want to let that pair raise the babies. Has anyone took the eggs out right after the hen has layed them and put them in the refrigerator or freezer until the next breeding season, then put them under foster parents..? Would that work? I am interested in trying that out.. :-/
symbro Posted July 29, 2007 Report Posted July 29, 2007 there is a whole thread about this idea somewhere. people who have done it on accident and others who do it regularly. do a quick search and see if you can find it!
THE FIFER Posted July 29, 2007 Report Posted July 29, 2007 i certainly would'nt put them in the freezer, as a youngster we kept poultry, and used to keep eggs for weeks, before puting them under broody hens, we also used to put eggs u got from the local shop, (not many as u only got one per person per week) under them and they hatched, as far as keeping eggs for a year i dont think they would keep fresh that long, but weeks yes, but not in the freezer, i think they would crack,
john robo Posted July 29, 2007 Report Posted July 29, 2007 i have taking a pair of eggs and kept them in a egg box in the bottom of the fridge for 12 weeks. floated them hatched 1 the other clear. still got the youngster.
THE FIFER Posted July 29, 2007 Report Posted July 29, 2007 yes no problem keeping for weeks but not a year i dont think, also as long as they are kept cool not freezer.
jimmy white Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 eggs will last for a while if not started to incubate,,,,, but must be turned regular if you have a good search on the forum ,youll find a good thread about this p.s def not in freezer
Peckedhen Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 There are plenty of hen and duck eggs on eBay but never racing pigeon! I wonder if there's a good reason? There surely must be a market for eggs from top birds? :-/
