Okay strange situation i have,  logan cocks have bred with (possible tumblers/garden doves) and we have 7 eggs waiting to hatch - first question what will be the result of that combination?  yes i know they will be squeakers but would they able to fly any distance at all or are we talking confined to garden.

Secondly, as i want to move the 6 hens of unknown species to stop them breeding, once these eggs are hatched roughly how long is it before the squeakers are self sufficient?

Thirdly does it work putting dummy eggs in if you dont want them to breed anymore?

Please share you wisdom with me ;D

yes they will fly about , the young are normally self sufficient when fully feathered under the wings and are feeding themselves . Yes use pot eggs to stop any more eggs being hatched but you would be better parting the cocks and hens if you have room

Thanks Shadow, but could the squeakers be able to fly around 50 miles?  Looks like i'm going to have to get another loft! ;D

My garden fantail/homer couldn't find their way back from the end of the street! ::)

Tumblers can't home but, I'm not sure if a cross could be trained or not. How far along are these eggs?  Why not pull them now and start breeding what you need.

Do you have just one loft?  Is there any way of dividing it so that you can control who breeds with who?  That way you can breed best cock to best hen and improve the quality of your birds.  Although they don't have to be fast for 'dove' releases they do need to be reliable. I would try to keep your Logans separate from the others.

The dummy eggs work by you replacing laid eggs with plastic ones. The birds will sit on them till they realise that they're not going to hatch roughly 18 - 22 days then, they lay again and you swap for dummy eggs again. ;)

Firstly I wouldn't go using them for racing or weddings etc but they will fly about your area.

Secondly  Roughly about 24 days or untill they can fly down from the nest and start pecking themselves.

And thirdly   Yes put dummy eggs under them which they will sit on for at least 18 to 19 days  then they will roll them out and lay.

Hi, have you established they are rollers now, if they are they are not the best of flyers re homing. I can home rollers in a few days as little as two because they have very little homing instict

Logans are a different case all together. I had one in for eight weeks down eggs and chipping, and it still went home when I thought it was safe on the chipping theory.

Like I said if they are rollers that roll then I will do a deal with you on white racers :-/

Hi Sue, I have a loft with two compartments, one with stock birds and one with the young logans in that i fly.  Problem arose when (and this shows my inexperience, we were given 6 additional white hens and it took me a while to realise that they were not logans or indeed any breed of white racing pigeon!, and we think they are a cross of tumblers/garden doves).

The eggs are due to hatch any time - one has just hatched in the last 10 mins actually!  I am going to remove the cross hens but so far have no where to put them, though i think i might know someone on here who may have them off me, free of course.

We are going to buy a shed as we will definetly be needing more room, but the trouble is we are not sure if any of the logans have bred with logans and therefore are unsure about the offspring. (we have three logan cocks and three hens) It seems that the logan cocks prefer the cross breeds rather than the logan hens!

I can't take them off the eggs cause i am a softy, but know that i need to stop them breeding anymore until i can sort something out and be sure of what is being bred.

Dovescot we really dont know if they are rollers tumblers or garden doves.  I know they aren't logans that is for sure!  You are welcome to have the hens once the eggs hatch and any of them that look like they are not logan's (which knowing my luck none of them are!)  If you are looking to part with white racers in return, i'm happy to swap.  How will i get them from Staffordshire to bonny Scotland? ;D

Now i'm in a quandry (is that how you spell it).  Okay, shall we say that once the sqeakers are able to fend for themselves i amtrak them up to you? ;D

I think that it will be hard to decide the parentage from the babies. Could you get into the loft early morning and see whether the hens (which should be on the nests at this time) are Logans and repeat early afternoon when the cocks should be sitting. If you have Logans on the nest each time then babies should, in theory (but not always), be Logans!  Not entirely accurate but might give you some idea.

another thought - start to train out the YB - you'll soon find if they can home or not!!

Sue :)

Have you had them out flying, you will soon know if they are rollers, the adults that is :)

Yes regards Amtrak, just get in touch nearer the time and we will sort something out. I will PM you my email address

i havent had the adult birds out flying as i thought they would fly back to where they came from, though from what everyone is saying that is unlikely!  What age should i let the young squeakers fly from, i guess this is the only way i will find out even though i will be a nervous wreck and worry sick.  Well they are sweet you know.

I will try the early morning loft visit and the early afternoon too, but limited to the weekend as i am at work normally.  But i know i have to sort this out if the release thing is going to work ;D

How are you going to do a release business if you are frightened to let them out.  ;D ;D ;D

Your adults will be well homed by now, were they not squeakers when you got them.

Wait till the squeakers are self sufficient then at least you will have them, I would let the cocks out just now :)

Aye, it's no her Logans she is wanting to swap, it's the others, I am interested in if they are rollers :-/

i think she said the logans are mixed with the tumblers and thats why she cant let the older ones out as racers would disappear, but, the tumblers might stay !!!! or tumblers could get carried away from area by logans before realising there lost !!!!!
