Guest Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 Likes of B&Q and Homebase do 10kg? bags of different types of sand, ranging from £3 - £5. Playpit stuff is most expensive, I think, but reckon its a fine grade, well sifted, kiln-dried sand, so there's nothing nasty in it to cut, infect or infest.
sammy Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 just leave the droppings to dry natural instead of sand does the same job nd dont cost anything ;D ;D
homer Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 personally , i dont like ANY deep litter ! deep litter is for chicken and turkey farmers with hundreds of birds to look after. for me its a shallow litter and clean em out every day ! (gonna be contraversial now) deep litter in your average pigeon loft is for lazy fanciers that only want to muck out a couple a times a year !...................................................................................................................................... there u go , i said it.
EAGLEOWL Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 i never use deep littler, i like to clean me lofts everyday ,helps me relax when i get home from work ,also makes the birds used to me lifting floor grills banging about etc as they watch in amusement. would you eat a meal in restraunt that never cleaned the plates and cups ;D yes i know some people are very successful flying to deep litter but its not for me .
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 scrape them out , best way for me

Actually I have to agree!!! and by the time you have finnished messing about with it raking it over, adding lime etc,etc you might aswell just clean out!,the kiln dried sand available from builders merchants is ok provided you have a bone dry loft but if rain can blow in forget it as it never dries out and can harbour cocci.
homer Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 PHEW ! thats 2 on my side ...........thank goodness, ive been in sum sheds where the s**t is 6 inches deep and iv bin told its the 'deep litter' system ?
chickadee Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 Well since we've built the new loft, have had nothing on floor, (it was easier to scrape I must say) then just been putting a sprinkling of stalosan down once scraped.

You can't beat just cleaning out every day,you should take pride in the state of your loft
PC Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Well i live in south france & i use deep litter as we are restoring the house last summer i used the excess "chaux" brushings from the stone walls this is basicaly a french building lime mixed with 3-4 parts sand then water when it dries its solid but just before its fully dry the excess is brushed off the walls to expose all the stones this excess is what ive used with this & large floor vents under the nest boxes the lofts are constantly dry racking & cleaning out is easy & the lime in the mix pretty much sorts out the nastys & ive seen no ill effects in the birds actualy it seams to still react slightly so once it gets wet it dries fast im going to try another section with this plus oak wood shavings as the high tanin levels make that death to most creepys but i will use wall mounted drinkers as i dont fancy the idea of the birds drinking water with the tanins in

jimbobboy Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Have you mates tried ground up corn cobs? Makes great floor liter and rakes up easy!!! Sell it here in US, Some dealers try to make it homemade but it must be cleaned and sterile , birds pick tru it sometimes and you don't want any corn in it. Very inexpensive. jimbobboy
Guest Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 i dont believe this thread is still running,i think its a pity that some members spend too much time worrying wot others have in their sheds and should occupy their minds on their own lofts! i use deep litter and i dont care 2 sh!xs wot others on this forum think. im not lazy for having deep litter nor is my cot inches deep in sh!x. i think its about time some members keep their thoughts on deep litter fanciers to themselves if they have NO PROOF that members on this site who use deep litter are wot some fanciers say they are(lazy). if u have seen deep litter sheds messed up then thats them not everyone who uses this method. wots the saying about tarring everyone with the same brush?????. i think ur find that( frank tasker )uses litter and can u fault his record of flying? if u have a clean cot cause u clean everyday so be it...if u have a deep litter cot so be it....untill someone pays for ur rent/corn/birds shed...then let each to their own, this thread will eventually bring hostility amongst each other and we dont want that do we?..so i say again each to his/her own and like it or lump it...paul :) :)
Guest karl adams Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 i use kilm dryed sand mixed with lime in the winter but when the races start it will stop and i will clean them 2 to 3 times a day
