symbro Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 We are starting the light system this year. watched a good tape on the system last year and remember the basics. unfortunately i no longer have access to that tape. as per alex bieche i have the breeders on 24/7 light. Unfortunately i can not make a time line for the rest without some help.
Guest Greenways Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 Why have you got the light on all the time, you only need it on from weaning till end of june 3am till 8.00am will do the trick.
velo99 Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 Sym, I turned off the lights yesterday for the for the first time in two weeks. Been cold here so I left them on to protect my chicks. Only problem I had was one cock abandoned his hen and young to mate with another hen. The chicks are just ten days and starting to pin,I hope they make it. The timeline with the lights would depend on your purpose. If they have access to outside light save a pound and turn them off during the day. If stimulation is the key,run them for 12 hours a day stretching to 14 over a month. If it is heat, watch them closely and resume a normal day timing when the weather warms. It might behoove you to keep them in an indie pen till then. good luck v99
dragons lair Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 How long does it take the youngbirds to moult with the light system. I started to wean the 15th of Feb. Just wondering if this speeded up the process or what.
Guest Greenways Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 They moult straight away first the flights thena heavy body moult should be finished before training
dragons lair Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 I will start training the first week in july. the races start on Aug 8. With this sytsem they should definitely be fininshed moulting by then. By the way this is my first year racing pigeons.
Chatrace Posted February 19, 2007 Report Posted February 19, 2007 How long does it take the youngbirds to moult with the light system. I started to wean the 15th of Feb. Just wondering if this speeded up the process or what. I wouild leave them on 20 hours of light a day have it go off 4 hours before natural sunrise. It is best if they see natural sunrise and then the lights go back on for 20 hours, natural light isn't enough incase it is overcast use the lights. Leave them on 20 hours till the body molt is finished or 5 weeks before the 1st race
symbro Posted February 19, 2007 Author Report Posted February 19, 2007 when should you have your last young bird in the loft?
dragons lair Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 The last bird in the loft will be about the 20th of March. That will be two rounds
Rentenier Posted April 28, 2007 Report Posted April 28, 2007 What is the "Light sytem" and what does it do for your pigeons.
Ronnie Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 does the light system make the youngsters mature like darkness youngsters as well as the moult?
symbro Posted July 24, 2007 Author Report Posted July 24, 2007 ronnie, rentenier dark cause birds to not moult flights light cause birds to moult flights... as far as i understand... that is the only real differance
jimmy white Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 how do these light system ybs perform as older birds? i take it that these light systom birds would have two full moults the first year ,,am i right in thinking this?
Chatrace Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 how do these light system ybs perform as older birds? i take it that these light systom birds would have two full moults the first year ,,am i right in thinking this? They have to use there flights for 2 years, I never had a problem as if one was damaged I would just cut it and remove so it would grow a new one
jimmy white Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 They have to use there flights for 2 years, I never had a problem as if one was damaged I would just cut it and remove so it would grow a new one do you prefer the light system to the darkness one ??? or whats the advantages or disadvantages ?? i have did the darkness system in the past quite successful but never tried the lightness system
Back garden fancier Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 Hi, I intend using the light system next year. The advantages seem to be that the birds moult out, including primaries. So they are not flying as old birds with baby feathers. Also you don't have to modify your loft with shutters or curtains. If you work shifts or can't be at the loft you don't have to worry about opening/closing shutters. The disadvantage is you need power to your loft for the timer/light.
PC Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 will the light system work for me ? I live in southern france & our young bird season starts end of june// start of july (avian flu permitting) as starting any later the weather is to hot when the longer young bird races arrive but in the winter -10 - 15 at night is not unusual up to about mid feb last year i bred from january thru to march for raceing the january birds all looked the part but i didnt get a good young bird among them where as the bred birds had a little spike of good birds just when the weather changed so im pairing latter this year what is the lattest you think birds could be bred for the light system under this time scale for racing ?
OLDYELLOW Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 depends on what kind of birds and what your intensions are
