i think you have got it wrong...deep litter doesnt mean deep shxt..ur entitled to your opinion but doesnt mean its right.

deep litter doesnt mean not cleaning out!!

I think you will find that you have read my post incorrectly,I see nothing wrong with a deep litter system managed correctly,it's just not for us,what I am against is people keeping filthy lofts and calling it deep litter,a deep litter bed requires  work and managing correctly.

i have used deep litter all my time keeping pigeons ,it drys out the muck...any bad bits gets thrown out and replaced with new shavings.

underneath the litter i put whitening..think its lime based to kill any bacteria underneath .

surprising how many birds love to nest in the litter.

many believe deep litter is a lazymans way and dirty for the birds which anyone knows that uses deep litter the proper way isnt.

its bone dry .

Thanks for your advice. Where do you get the whitening stuff? :)

Most fanciers that came to visit us and when they see our lofts they reckon I am was too clean, In the main loft I now use hemp as our suppliers cannot get easy bed, I rake it most days and sprinkle with Stalosan once a weekbut I still scrape the aviaries every day and use loft white once a week. I scrape my fancy pigeon loft every day and use Stalosan or loft white once a week and all our birds seem to being well on it. Our dove cotes are cleaned and sprayed with Avisafe each time the young have fledged

Shavings are no use, they are too light and it all just ends up banked up the sides with a bare floor in the middle. We have all our birds on soft chip which is again used for horses,it's identical to easi bed but about £1 a bale cheaper,we still go round every day and pick the droppings off the top.

Although we would never personally use a deep litter system a deep litter system managed correctly can work but this is not to be confused with deep poo ie the lazy fanciers method!!

Some people say not cleaning out builds imunity,it just builds disease, how healthy would you be if you were locked in a shed with god knows how many other people sat in your own poo?

shavings are ideal for pigeons we have used them in our loft for the last 25 years without a problem and sure it will bank up at the sides for a week or so untill you get plenty sh*t mixed with them  and all you need to stop them from banking up at the sides is a rake unless your one of these lazy men you talk about  ;D
