andrecrock Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 I noticed something today that to me was just amazing.I got a stock pair that has been together for 3 seasons and bred me some cracking youngins. This morning with the nice sun shine i placed the bath in the aviary for the birds to enjoy.I noticed first in was the cock of the mentioned pair(whilst the hen is sitting on the eggs).Added to the water is condis crystals that i brought back from south Africa turning the water purple. As the cock got fought out of the bath he returned to his box,and with in seconds the he came fluttering out,as if he was fought out of his box. After watching him for a while i noticed it was his hen fighting him out every time he came in.For about 20 min this went on until she realised it was hubby and returned to the eggs. Is this because he cleaned himself up and she did not like this or could it be the smell of the condi crystals that trough her?has anybody else ever had this?
Skull Lofts Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Hi The birds must have a keen smelling systom, as when they are paired up the cock is able to distinguish his hen from all the other birds when its even impossible for the fancier to do so, especially when theres a few sisters in the loft which all looks the same! IMO this could only be done by him smelling his mate! Skull
Guest shippy Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 dont really know but scientists now believe thier keen sense of smell is a main factor towards thier homing ability
steve d Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 dont really know but scientists now believe thier keen sense of smell is a main factor towards thier homing ability I seen a program were they temporary removed the sense of smell by using drops of a substance in the nostrils, the birds were liberated and failed to navigate until the sense of smell came back, the point the scientists was trying to make is that all areas have different smells and the pigeons use that to navigate, it was a very good program to watch :)
