Having lost 3 of the 4 I sent to my second race last week I was a bit down to say the least, O well I thought iv still got 16 late breeds that are comming on nicely I can now focus on them and build for next year, let them out this morning they were all flying great suddenly for no reason they split into to kits of 8 and that was the last IV seen of 8 of them.

got to say as a newcomer this year there seem to be more downs than ups in this game.

Do you think the split was because of hawk/hawks? Sorry to here about your loss. Hopefully they will work their way home. Good luck.

i remember my clubmates looking me up and down when i started and saying 'you'll be all right..you don't look like a quitter' ....i  didn't take much notice ...but starting is tough and you should be proud of how far you've come so far. it will get better but it will take time...next year both you and your birds will be older, wiser and more experienced. as far as i'm concerned yb racing is not a true reflection of pigeon racing and should be approached with caution by new starters. i didn't race ybs when i started, they did nothing as yearlings but came good as 2y/o.  try thinking in terms of building a team of pigeons in 3 years ...give the birds a few races/rotate them /protect the odd one..get them experienced with the min. of risk. best of luck....i'm sure some will work back(ok)

well my son,the biggest mistake you will make will be concentrating on those latebreds, you will only stress them out, through your own eagerness to do well, and have probably  nothing left after the usual early season  cold wind training  most ill informed fanciers do next year.

On the other hand, even if you only have the 1 bird left, why not put all your thought on this one,go in the loft talk to him,ask him if he can  fight his way to the top of the result sheet for you?,let him have a nestbox.give him something to come home to ,not just clinging to a small scabby perch, gently hold your hand out to him , with perhaps a titbit for him, even thou he may be scared first of all, with paience,he will become master of his home ,and with you gentle playfighting with him, making sure you pull you hand back quickly when he threatens you,you could have plenty of fun in the remaining races, just think when you take your 1 bird down basketing night, your bird against allcomers, and you will be suprised how well you will do..hopefully becoming a better fancier along the way ;)

some will get back [trust me on this one mate] you have got to think long term ,i have learned the hard way that you will take a good kicking, but every time you do the important part is to learn from it,sit down count your blessings,it could have been worse you could have lost the lot, then think what you could have done to avoid it,if you cannot think of anything, then as nazi as it sounds accept that sxxx happens [and always to pigeon fanciers never cat owners ,the main thing is to me don't take risks with your birds, you would be i assume, trying to build a team for the future, right or wrong, pigeon racing is a long term venture sorry if this sounds like a lecture, its the way i think about pigeon racing

Read this again and again till it sinks in.

I said on another post my pigeons talk to me well i bet this fanciers birds talk to him as well.

The first year is allways the worst but as you get to know the birds so do they get to know you and your routines.Time spent in the loft is best spent watching and listening.

I quite often just sit in the shed of an evening doing nothing except sitting watching and listening.

Hi Paul. no mate not had any come back, thanks to all the members on here for your words of support,im learning fast that this is very much a game of highs and lows, never mind the smaller team means they all have plenty of space in fact I only need to lose a few more and they can have a private section each to live in lol.

FREEBIRD Im sure they just split into two teams for no aparant reason one team landed the other just went on their own,no other birds/hawks cant understand it, not like there overcrowded either, just one of those things I guess.
