mart Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 none of them have been in a basket before and the first race is a 2-3 weeks away. i have been told will prob struggle to race them as young birds. but not sure how long it will take to get them up to a distance to start racing them. i think the first race is about 100 miles away.

If they hav,nt been in a basket before put them in now with some water on the side, some people leave them in over night but personally I dont,if the weather is bad and you cant train just put them in the basket for a few hours, otherwise train them as much as you can they should be o.k. for the first race

mart Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 do i have to get them up to the 100 mile race point? with training them what sort of distance is ok . thanks
Guest Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 do i have to get them up to the 100 mile race point? with training them what sort of distance is ok . thanks if you could get them that far would be great. but i think your asking a little too much too soon . treat them easy to start , see how they come . increase distance when happy . if u could get them out to 40 mile i my opinion , i think that would do. do the fliers in your area send on a trainer / transporter if so how far does that go? if top yb flier in your club only goes to 25 mile and keeps em there ask him/her and you go to same spot . hope this helps . andy.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 do i have to get them up to the 100 mile race point? with training them what sort of distance is ok . thanks our first race is 100 miles and we have been training them at 40 miles just now and training them in pairs from 15 miles, tomorrow we intend to go to Stafford which is 50 miles and then next week we will go to about 65 and that will be alternated by single tossing from 15 to 20 miles
schouwman71 Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 mart training young birds is all about getting them from A-B has fast has possible, out of the basket into the loft, first start by letting them out just in front of the loft everyday back into the loft with food waiting for them then a mile away, make sure there hungry, out of the basket into the loft ,food waiting for them, keep moving them further away, again food waiting,A-B has fast has possible,if you can get them to around 15mls a few time and there racing back like hell A-B you will have a good season and yes you will get them from the races easy, keep them healthy and on light corn for the first few races, there not burning anythink off in the early races, gerry plus mixed with a little barley is a good mix.think small before big. les
Craig05 Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 I started mine off at 10 miles with a few old birds to show them the ropes. i have got them up to 58 miles now and only dropped one youngster. i plan to bring them back to 10 miles next week and release them every day from there in batches of 5. i am happy that they know the way home now, its just a matter of getting their fitness up. if your first race is 100 miles, i would recomend training them up to about 55 miles. Are the first two races from the same place in your club, if so it might be an idea to start your season from the second race, that way the majority of the other birds on the transporter would have all done it the week before. you should be ok, because the majority of the way home your birds would follow and keep up with the rest. in my opinion the sprint races are won or lost within the last 10 - 15 miles, where the birds need to be confident to break and head in the direction of their own loft, rather than just follow the rest. best of luck mate, its my first season over here, and i cant wait either.
steve d Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 What are your views on training about 6 mile only morning and night no further, the reason I ask this is every year my birds go no further than 16 mile and more than hold there own in a very competitive club, our first race is 85 mile and I always get the mostly home, now them youngsters have not covered 69 mile of that journey before yet they always come. This time I am thinking of going 6 mile only morning and night mainly due to save on diesel costs and time, i would like other views on this as Im sure a few continentals follow this system. :) :)
Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 will any one continue to train after the first race
OLDYELLOW Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 will any one continue to train after the first race i wont be just training for me

Guest shadow Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 20 miles three times a week used to start my at 20 and kept them there until first race then dropped the training to twice per week, education is the name of the game never bothered about winning with them if they did it was a bonus i wanted them for future old bird racing not burnt out shells. :)
