DAVIDL Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 as far as im aware the darkness system is used to force the ybs to moult sooner than normal so they can race the full yb program rather than them be falling to bits flying natural......the ybs are made to moult be simulating the hours of winter which i think will be about 8`oclock am to come light and approx 4`oclock pm to come dark, im just restartng this year with ybs myself and am hoping to try the darkness system.......obviously there is more to it than what ive said but as far as i know that is the basics of it......
Guest frank dooman Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 i do the darkness very sucessfuly and that link is very helpfull but i would say that playing about to much with y/birds can be very dangerous especialy for a new start infact i would sugest that a new start should racethe y/birds on natural for a few yearsjust to get to know whats what just my oppinion
Guest stevie-b Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 if u do it correctly u will be fine it does not have to be pitch black inside i put mines on from 6.30pm untill 7.30 am i would recomend to use gerry plus for feeding try to ensure stale air can escape when darkend what i would emphasise is train them as much as possible
Guest stevie-b Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 no probs i also get mine tested a few times just to make sure everything fine belgasol in water fri sat i use garlic on corn twice a week and adherb twice a week on corn also
Guest puresoontjen Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 what i do is bang them all up around 6pm and go back at 10pm and open the doors so they get the break of daylight thats if you got an avairy on so they dont fly off if you use some thing to dark it down do it as if you can read a newpapper. so they can get to the drinkers
friendsloft Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 Darkness youngsters will keep the birds in full feather for the longer races at the back end of the season, natural you will only get about 3 races out of them before they start falling to bits, as you are just starting off with young birds and trying to build a team for 2011 i would choose the natural way the birds would have been schooled had at least 3 races under their belt, stop them at let them mature for 2011 season with out too much stress Ken

David Home Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 I would suggest that you learn to walk before you run. I don't mean that to sound patronising but I feel you would be far better racing your youngsters naturally for a couple of years just to get to know your birds and their habbits first. Once youv'e done that, then if you still want to have a go at the darkness system then I would suggest that you read as much as you can on the subject, visit as many top flyers using this system as you can. Then work out your own plan of attack and stick to it, because what works for one man dosen't always work for everyone. All the best with whatever you choose to do.
