mac1 Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 going to give it a go for the first time, wondering to box or not to box the hens.and also any tips you may have thanks
Guest gladdo Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 yeah mac go for it .. hens are very hardy more so than the cocks.... they will sulk the cocks if all not going as they like it but the hens get on with it ..... all my birds last year to score and win were hens !!!!!! mikey....
stantheman Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 i only box the hens if they show an interest in pairing to each other, and i also darken loft down it helps to stop them pairing to each other, they outfly the cockbirds when exercising and racing especially as the distance increases
Guest Owen Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 I tried putting hens on widowhood. Never again. The hens were fine and they exercised really well. Two of them scored in the first race, so I thought that this was the thing for me. Then other Fanciers' cocks started to follow them home. My loft and garden was like an Egyptian Brothal. I just had to stop because these cocks were hanging around waiting for my hens to come out. There was nothing I could do to stop the daily orgy. So it was back to cocks on widowhood. However, I think if you can get it working as it should, hens would be able to do you proud. Bear in mind I know little or nothing about it, my opinion is that hens should be confined to their nestboxes and probably darkened as well. After all, when they are fit and well feed they are bound to want to pair together.
mac1 Posted March 8, 2010 Author Report Posted March 8, 2010 im usually the first to have them out in the morning will try and let them out last a night ,ive got them boxed at the moment as i work all day find it hard to keep a eye on them, only racing 10 hens just to pass time, looking forward to ybs though

Guest frank dooman Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 ive raced roundabout for 4 years last year my hens were in that good a condition i had nearly every single one on eggs ive tried every thing from balloons to bouncing floors the only way to stop them pairing is to box them but thats not for me too much hassel so i will do what i done last year and re-pair after the 4/5th race
Guest j.bamling Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 ive raced roundabout for 4 years last year my hens were in that good a condition i had nearly every single one on eggs ive tried every thing from balloons to bouncing floors the only way to stop them pairing is to box them but thats not for me too much hassel so i will do what i done last year and re-pair after the 4/5th race i had mine on roundabout last year, i never had any trouble at all with them pairing together i never had 1 egg off them and they raced fantastic aswell i just had them on grill floors and on poles i never had to box them at all
Guest JonesyBhoy Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 I think the way Delboy keeps his hens is excellent... with the doors that come across the front of the perches...
Guest frank dooman Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 i had mine on roundabout last year, i never had any trouble at all with them pairing together i never had 1 egg off them and they raced fantastic aswell some years are better than others jimmy but if you think that you are trying to get them in the best condition for raceing so it stands to reason they will pair and the better the condition the more they will pair up
Guest frank dooman Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 I think the way Delboy keeps his hens is excellent... with the doors that come across the front of the perches... yes agree thats the next best
