symbro Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 i came across a website long ago that had daily pictures of pigeon babies so that you could compair your bird to it and guess closely at its age. does anyone happen to have that web address? follow up question... what age do you all seperate the babies from their parents? what do you look for physically that says it is time?
Chatrace Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Dry under the wing and eating and drinking by themselves 32 to 35 days I usually move them out of the Breeder section.
Guest Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Wow Bill, I usually move mine at 23 days
Peckedhen Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 http://www.pigeons.com/photogallery/baby/sara/sindex.html http://www.speedpigeon.com/baby_racing_pigeon.htm Here's a couple of links to photos of baby pigeons. I've looked at them but even so, am absolutely amazed at how quickly my fantails are growing!!

Very good links - and - on the website in a few days old later - puts a baby in the bath, why is this at the early state ?
symbro Posted February 11, 2006 Author Report Posted February 11, 2006 thank you... Speed Pigeons is the one i was trying to find. looks like answer is 21-35 days?
Peckedhen Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Yeah, well I didn't think it would be the baby Sara link, but I love that one all the same - it proves beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
Peckedhen Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Just remembered someone telling me to move the youngsters when their tails are two inches long! :-/ :-/
Guest speckled Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Lol peckedhen or between there legs (the tail i mean) ;D ;D ;D 23 to 25 days old for me, the birds have to be picking up & at that age thay should be./ ;D ;D Speckled
billy_g Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 when i think they and i are confident [23 26] days old ill move them better to be safe than sorry
snowy Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 whenever they are pecking on there own & drinking, & always keep a close eye on them when you first move them to make sure they are drinking properly
carl Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 i put my youngbirds over when they are fully featherd under the wings, they must also be pecking/eating on there own or maybe starting to leave there box.
Guest Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I think the two websites make good contrasts - baby sara shows in my opinion what NOT to do with birds of that age, while the racing pigeon one shows at least some respect for the bird's fragility - photo shoots all taken with the bird in the nest. Brilliant, brilliant photos on the racing pigeon site shows exactly the difference between a 23 day old youngster and, for example, one a week older. So more than photoshoots - something we can actually use!!!! My only thought was why does the fancier still have the youngster in a nest bowl at 23 days + ??? Have concluded that around 28 days is time enough; bird is feathered, eating & drinking, taking keen interest in whats going on outside the box and showing every inclination of leaving it under its own steam. Its telling you its ready 'move me now' ... have found they never 'go back' if they are left in the box until this stage.
Peckedhen Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Baby Sara was hand reared - not sure why, but this must have involved a lot a handling - you are right though Bruno. Young Westy has just PMed me warning me not to handle my babies!! :B :B
Rentenier Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I believe the bird must be in the air by 30 days or it will never fly properly.
hooky Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 your signature contradicts ya there rentenier lmfao
