GHQ Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Hi all our ob races start mid april, I will start trianing down the road by mid march.
MsPigeon Posted February 13, 2006 Author Report Posted February 13, 2006 hi Carol Racing April - Training March. How bout you? I'm interested to know what the other "critters" are that you keep - arent they like the "gremlins" that found film fame!!!!!??????? Hi Dave, We start racing in mid April too. But I will start training as soon as I can as nice days are few and far between here. So if it's a nice day and I have time, I will start soon with road training. As for my critters, I just mean my pets, critters being a nick name for creatures I guess. I have 4 dogs, 5 cats, 6 goats and their 7 new kids, 13 head of cattle, 1 turtle, tropical fish, ball python snake, canaries, geese, peacocks, guineas, chickens, ducks, and last but NOT least pigeons. I think thats all... Carol ;D
speedbird Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 cocks ere exercising 45mins am hens out pm 45mins & both have been since on eggs only on good days all chipped off now & will basket train once young away
Diamond dave Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 Carol, Do your 7 new kids keep you up at night? - How do you find time for pigeon racing - dont the cats bother the pigeons!! and SNAKES....... are you mad??Lol. How bad is your weather Carol, are you in the area with all the snow at the moment?
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 I train short now and only 2 times a week but I try to pick cold and bad days I like those crisp mornings I am giving birds all they want they have food down 24/7 and are getting open loft so they fly out a lot, I dont let my birds sit during winter I dont like letting them fatten up too much and when you let birds out that have been sitting they are like a buffet for hawks this cuts my losses as far as losing birds I havent except for a cat and a hawk I have yet to lose any birds on tosses I did have one come home with broken wing he walked up driveway I am training in diffrent directions and mostly off the line of flight we are flying in 2 directions this year ( north and south ) so I am exercising their heads
pigeonjock Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 I DONT SEE THE POINT IN HAMMERING BIRDS TOO EARLY IN THE SEASON IN COLD FRESH WINDS,THEY CAN KNOCK AN OLD BIRDS END IN NEVER MIND AN OLDER EXPERIENCED BIRD.I'D RATHER MISS THE FIRST FEW RACES THAN THROW AWAY PROMISING BIRDS FOR THE SAKE OF A FEW POINTS.I'VE STILL TO SEE A BIRD THATS THAT GOOD IT CANT BE LOST FROM THE FIRST (SHORTEST) RACE OF THE SEASON IN A COLD HEAD WIND THAT IT ISN'T READY FOR.WE CAN GET COLD HEAD WINDS LATER IN THE YEAR BUT BY THEN THE BIRDS ARE ACCUSTOMED TO WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THEM.APRIL IS NOTORIOUS NOW TO BE FREEZING COLD WHEN THE FIRST RACE COMES ROUND AND THE RACE IS USUALLY A SHAMBLES WITH GOOD EXPERIENCED BIRDS LOST AND TURNING IN LATE.PEOPLE WHO HAVE FLOWN BIRDS FOR MORE YEARS THAN I CAN REMEMBER HAVE SHORT MEMORIES AND SEND FULL TEAMS TO THESE EARLY RACES AND THEN BLAME THE CONVOYER FOR POOR RETURNS,WHEN REALLY IT IS BAD MANAGEMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE THAT HAS CAUSED THE POOR RETURNS!!!!!!WAIT FOR THE WEATHER TO IMPROVE AND YOU WILL BENEFIT IN THE LONG RUN
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Thats why I am training now I am getting birds down the road so they will be ready if the weather is bad just because its unpleasant getting out in the cold for us dosent make it bad for birds
