westy Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 has anyone got any ideas in basket training and what to look out for ect and how to start it.
Tony C Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 Ideally you want to use the same type of crate/basket that your club use. The first couple of times you put them in there they will try to get out and take some time to settle. Don't have loose pigeons in the same loft/section when basket training them, they wont settle. By all means put a drinker on and feed them a bit of seed the first couple of times but don't expect them to drink straight away it'll take them a good few times in the basket for them to get used to it. If you've got y'bs of different ages put the younger ones in a basket on their own.
NANCYVIEWLOFTS Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 we have found that young birds will eat straight away in the basket that is those nearest the feed trough the others have difficulty getting to it so we take out those that have eaten until all have eaten drinking is another matter we feed them in the loft and leave them without water for half an hour then we basket them with the water trough on and they drink almost straight away
Guest Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 I always do as Nancyview, feed in the loft with the drinker taken out, then put them in the crates. I do this for 3 to 4 evenings.
Guest shadow Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 I put all my young birds in baskets on a saturday and they are given a liight feed and the water is put on and they stay in them until the old birds are home from racing then the may be let uot depending on the weather or they are put back in the loft through the traps.
speedbird Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 when i first wean my ybs i put in a basket & they are fed in there untill all are percherd up now when i put the basket in they basket them them selves!!!
jimmy white Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 I USED TO BASKET TRAIN THEM AS YOUNG AS POSIBLE, FEED THEM,, WAIT A WHILE THEN POUR THE WATER FROM THE WATTERING CAN INTO THE DRINKERS, AND LET THEM HEAR IT SPLASH, FOUND THEY LEARNED VERY QUICKLY, AND WERE VERY CALM IN THE BASKET

jimmy white Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 IT DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF THE BASKET, BUT TRY TO KEEP IT HALF FULL
