speedbird Posted April 29, 2006 Report Posted April 29, 2006 what do other members feed there widowhood cocks/hens & does the food alter as the races get longer & sometimes harder take today for instance north east wind
jimmy white Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 hi speed bird no one seems to be answering you, never mind pal ill put my 2 pennith worth in ;D ;D ;D after the race i fed depurative with yeast and lemon in it, fed this till tuesday then fed widowhood mix,i gave them a few peanuts and increased this as the races got longer and harder, i had electrolytes in the water when they come home, and vits in the water wednesday. 3 days b4 race i put a pinch of conditioner mixed with hormoform in their boxes after they were fed, after the 200 mile mark i fed widowhood mix from the monday this was for the birds racing up to 360 miles,,, the 5, 600 milers were treated completely differantly,,,,, this ws just a rough guide, as i would change it somtimes due to the weather and the race. good luck to you speedy,,, oh just one thing i never raced yearlings b4 middle of may or any widowhood cocks for that matter, i would tain a few spare hens for the first 3 races
speedbird Posted May 3, 2006 Author Report Posted May 3, 2006 thanks jimmy seems that no one want to give away there trade secerets!!! more or less the same as me i use diet mix instead of deputative & also feed peanuts as the races get longer & when they go off there food usually on friday always still eat the peanuts though
Guest Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 I have been trying the V-Laga Gerry+ feeding system, but have only managed a 3rd and 5th club using it so far, so Ive added a bit of hemp to it and given them a few peanuts each this week and they are loft flying much better already.
speedbird Posted May 3, 2006 Author Report Posted May 3, 2006 i feed bandfords super widowhood mixed with gerry+ birds are fit enough but sometimes circle over the fields which i dont understand how can this be they are bouncing so deciced to train when this happens
Guest Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Do you give them any minerals and grit, they may be looking for something extra. I dont measure my food, just put enough in and take it out after 15 mins up to wednesday and then leave them to have as much as they want thursday till friday dinner. Their looking good this week and looked like they were doing 100mile/hr when they went past this morning, that could be the DMG in their water though ;D, which I always give after a head wind race.
speedbird Posted May 3, 2006 Author Report Posted May 3, 2006 yeah get minerals dont know if there just very keen & chaseing anything that they see whats dmg?? what that used for?
Guest Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 DMG is basically Vit B15, and give them that extra bit of energy. I dont listen to most fads, but DMG works wonders after a hard race.
speedbird Posted May 3, 2006 Author Report Posted May 3, 2006 do you give them that every week & on what days?
Guest Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 I use it when they fly a bit slugish like they do after a hard race, it seems to aid recovery very quick. Using last weeks race for an example, which was a north wind, means this week they get DMG in the water monday to thursday.
Guest Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Pure undiluted Dimethylglycine - DMG is traditionally used to reduce lactic acid build up in the muscle of most species and delay the onset of fatigue. Racing pigeons - Add 1-2 5ml spoonfuls to a gallon of water. (can be given daily) Greyhounds - Allow half to one 5ml spoonful per dog. Horses - Give 1-2 spoonfuls to a gallon of water or as suggested by your Vet. NB Check acceptability of using in animals participating in competition. Usage is couple of days before a race and during training.
jacksafc Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Speedbird, when i raced in the past (restarted last year) used to try all kinds of systems and had the field thing you describe for a long time, everything they need is in the loft but they used to circle the fields and sometimes drop, never sussed it, whether chasing hens or bored but eventually it seemed to right itself. Regarding feed i did virtually the same as Jimmy White, even holding the widowhood mix back til Wednesday afternoon with good results. Nowadays, people are using Gerry plus and Diet and similar to Spelbin i'm trying it but in my case without any success. Spelbin, not teaching my granny to suck eggs but i always found if they got too much of either depurative or mix all week they didnt show as well, liked to have them looking for something on Friday and the ones that ate well friday usually turned up.
Guest Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 My feeding system has gone out of the window, with all this bad weather we are having at the moment. It been so damp lately, Ive hated going down to the loft this week as it feels like winter. Its impossible to conditions pigeons in this weather dont you think.
speedbird Posted May 22, 2006 Author Report Posted May 22, 2006 good points raised i deciced to pair them up this week as not happy how they are loft flying gonna get em down on eggs then maybe split up again today after being paired up after this weeks race flew 45mins am & pm & didnt look at the fields!! where can you get DMG from & is it like transform?
Guest Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 Speedbird, I got my DMG last year from Boddy & Ridewood (www.everythingforpets.com), but its not the pure stuff and was cut with glucose. So when I went to blackpool this year I got the pure stuff at one of the stands. I havent really had a chance to test its worth this year yet, as the racings been very sporadic for the UNC at the moment, with races being cancelled and 4 day holdovers etc, then days of constant rain, making it impossible to get the birds out. If you cant get hold of it, PM your address and Ill send you the DMG that I was using last year. Stephen
speedbird Posted May 23, 2006 Author Report Posted May 23, 2006 thanks stephen for that may give it a try
jacksafc Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 Speedbird Ken Smith stocks it Philadelphia, Houghton way, if you get stuck his shop is on the Up North Combine website under pigeon sales.
