i have been racing young birds from 2000 and i have always been darkness unpaired but if they pair up i will give them a nest bowl but i have not done much with them like this i think they always race well to the loft if you can get them tame and it is the love of home that dose this and i late the kids in to play when the birds are in the loft so they get use to this but this is only for the young birds

What about darkness paired.I let the youngbirds do as they wish, all boxes have a nest bowl,if they want to sit they can.I wont be doing this, this season trying something new.Youngbirds going on roundabout next season

i used to race two teams one darkness and one natural , the natural ones were stopped at 130 miles, they were for national races later. my darkness ones were seperated , cocks and hens, and let together on a friday , with 2 bricks 12 inches apart right along the sides and back , on the floor of the loft with a board running along the top , each wee box ,i put a nest pan, and some straw, and just let them get on with it, it was easy cleared up after the race , and the birds separated again. replaced it all the following friday, and boy, did these birds race.. kept the natural s in case of disasters.

I have been seeing a LOT of info about clubs banning darkness or having seperate schedules for darkness birds we have one guy here who has had outstanding results with darkness he sent 17 birds and got a 16 bird drop and scored the first 16 positions I dont care who or where you are thats flying tough !!! although I think I'll stick to natural

Slugmoney,

Why do you think it`s good flying, more like bad manners, that bad sportsman should try to learn to be a gentelman...what a disgrace...no wonder we can`t get young/new starters coming into the sport, what`s wrong with clocking his 1st bird and perhaps his pool pigeon....i can`t understand that mentality....dragging this sport into the gutter,i could understand if it was a real long distance race....but it`s usually some mediocre sprint,or young bird, where older fanciers should`nt have a clock set,let alone time 16....years ago novices could get on the sheet in the early youngbird races, keeping them happy, not now...to many glory boys,..it makes me despair!!!!

The first 16 is not new 30 years ago TOM LAKINS from deal in kent was doing this with the first 20 thay was Busschaerts and thay was NOT ON DARKNES just good pigeons in the right hands

I believe that some fanciers can get carried away with racing young birds and lose sight of what they are really doing, racing babies. I personally use young bird races as an education for the years ahead and if I happen to win a Y.B. race I treat it as a bonus.

We have at least 2 if not 3 races every week, we have an A race 12 birds, a B race unlimited shipping, and a C race 2 birds, so all can compete I don't think that a bird should be penalized just because he is the 5th bird home from your loft by that I mean if you have a bird that is the 5th bird home and you have a clocking limit of 4 birds your 5th is out of luck even though he might of been the 5th bird in the race I am pretty sure the A.U. has some rule regarding clocking limits I am in a small club but the competition is tight I want my birds to compete against as many as possible I am not going to start defending my style of flying as I didn't invent it but it is how we compete here we have a very wide and deep area with wind playing a major consideration in how the results fall ( as in a lot of clubs ) our members consistently vote to change courses and directions to prevent different members from winning races to combat this a lot of members have taken to shipping big numbers of birds in order to pull the flock in another direction so you have 10% of members shipping 60% of birds it is how we play the game here ...

Now I am already hearing the comments of how can you handle this many birds, its not right, how do you get to know the birds ect.....

It is a LOT easier to fly 24 birds, and just for the record I fly very tough in the 2 bird series but my specialty is getting birds home when they aren't supposed to be I love to pound my club there is no better feeling than to know when the phone rings it's the race secretary telling you they changed the time to figure and my clock is full. Our 2 bird race was designed to let the new guys get a bird in the points it was also set so that a guy with a few birds could also be competitive what we have learned is this the guy who wins the 300 bird race usally is at the top of the 40 bird race. we are flying 2 x 600 mile races this year in a club of our size it is hard to get any acceptance of what we do I will tell you this we have several members who fly all over the world ( Bill Bonwell who was one of the Cattryce brothers original agents and also handled a lot of Bolle birds ) or the Bybee's ( took several positions on the sun city million "51st" also have a bird in the snowbird doing well ) we also have the guy who won last years A.H.P.I award in old birds flying here, another member has a loft full of Clausing birds that he ships all over the world, I would go into more detail about him but with the recent events in florida I wont go on  so I guess what I am saying is here when you get a drop you should clock it I am a vetran flyer and I hate to see that happen but all it does to me is make me tougher next week I dont think that giving a new guy a race does anyone any good nothing I have ever had given to me is as good as getting something I have worked for

I think bad sportsmanship is NOT seeing the fact that a fellow club member tore your head off and handed it to you this guy BEAT ME FAIR AND SQUARE and I didnt like it my new goal to PUT 19 OF 20 ON THE SHEET

I have learned a lesson here!!!

I still beat him on the season though and for the year thats why I will stick to natural

Ben if i had 16 birds drop together before anyone else,i would clock them all.Why cheat yourself and your birds to let other birds get positions they didnt win.If the birds arnt good enough to get on the sheet then thats the way it goes i think.Im only a new starter myself and i want to get good positions because my birds were good enough, not because the best flyer in my club stopped clocking to let me have a position.Only my opinion.

Your idea on clocking 16 if you have them is destroying clubs. if you clock 16 you will end up flying against yourself, you should be happy in the knowledge knowing you could take first 16 if you so desired rather than rubbing noses in it. nowadays you have to think of new starters. This is just one thing that is killing the sport. It is fact that flyers will not raise to the challenge but look for easier clubs to race in. not everyone will lokk at it your way. people get easily downhearted.

Imagine a non league football team playing in the premeir league, how many fans would they end up with after getting beat 9-0 every week... not many and the same with pigeon racing you have to look at yourself and ask what would clocking in 16 each week do to the club.... It is happening all over the country now... There are only 5 cards so why clock 16... Tactics is required nowadays to keep this sport alive.

I guess thats how they feel about it personally if I was getting beat that bad all the time I would switch to darkening or widowhood or natural or whatever it was that was causing me to get beat that bad and try to improve on it to put me back out front

Carl

Kudos I am glad to see that you are willing to work for results and don't " expect " to win races you should do well with that attitude

P.S. I have layed down several times over the years to encourage club unity !!!

I try to use YB racing as purely education, I would however race darkness split off if I had the room, but I havent so I just train them as much as possible and race them natural and stop them when they have gone too far in the moult.

Thread's gone a bit adrift methinks.  ;D

Wondered why no natural, paired? Have voted 'other' for this.

Cannot say anything about the BEST system, because I think it really depends on what you are trying to achieve with your young birds.

I'd like it to be a good all-round 'induction' towards being a damned good future racer...

i use darkness if yb pair up i let them sitt rear young ect the others i split up & like jimmy let the rest go together on friday put bowls in & boy what em race home some i then split up again others leave in to start sitting ect

One problem I do experience with paired young birds is that the 'first' pair to take up  cause problems for the others by claiming the floor, and generally cause mayhem in the young bird end. To get round that, I usually give them a nest box in the old bird end. In 2006, intend to let the 2005 paired young birds go together again if they want, as this means most of my racing cocks and hens are already settled to their box.

When do you breed your YB's slugmonkey? Maybe it is the early bred birds that are mating up. I think if they are kept on a busy training scedule they are also not as likely to mate up.

Hi, i have raced both natural and darkness y/b,s and am convinced the natural's if flown on the same system as the darky's are equal except for the last few race's when the natural's are moulting .
