Best age for Stock birds

Recommended Posts

Many have said that the best youngsters are bred off young stock birds, obviously this is not true in many cases.

Others say that pigeons bred out of old stock birds mature much slower and will only start racing well from their second year onwards.

Has anyone on the list found this to be true? I certainly have not, a good stock bird will breed good birds regardless of age in my opinion and experience.

wiley you talk out of something mate, I have old pigeons even one 23 years old and they continue to bred winners , would you flog your grandad off down the road if you think he to old. wiley mate your young and when i pop down to london mate and buy you a coffe and we could chat, i think you gotta a lot to learn and think about, also good breeders should produce consistant birds within 2 years and not nessisarily winners but consistant pigeons,

all the best mate

please dont insult me, i was stating my preference, yes you are right good stock pigeons will breed winners for many years, the father of my loft has bred me winners near enough every year and his 9 yr old now. But i always pair old pigeons to young pigeon, cos like you say since you mention my grandad would prefere a young lady, and would have more chance of knocking out a few good babies look at Des o Connor.

A bird who breeds  winners  will breed winners whatever age it is,the hardest part is identifying which those birds are in the first place as they are not necesarily winners themselves, sometimes your winners breed nothing special.

many people say,if your buying stock birds only buy youngsters for stock and only buy older ones from entire clearance sales, but i dont find this to be true,i have bought many a good pigeon out of the B.H.W at 8-9 yrs old that has bred me some fantastic pigeons, and left me some youngsters from them that have gone into the stock loft that has bred winners.Les

One thing is true!!! History tells us that Long Distance origin pigeons remain fertile longer than shorter distance families. This is a general statement of course but every pigeon has a best before date as as its approuched them the quality drops.

With Raymond Moleveld we own some 300 pairs of breeding and many are from 1993, 94 and 95. Now they are breeding super youngster but when you compare them to there much older brothers and sisters you often see they are just a little less developed however these pigeons posses super gens and often make terrifc breeding pigeons.

De Tovenaar is still breeding well and he is 14 years old but i wouldnt expect him produces too many 1st prize winners but for sure his g-children will win many races over the coming years in Holland and Britain.!!

When it comes to breeding a race team i prefer 1,2,3 year old but i have some very good 5,6,7 and 8 year old distance breeders!!

i beleive its very difficult to get a really good stiock pair, but if you manage it, they seem to breed winners at any age
