pairing up

ok here is a question that has puzzled me for a long time, since i have never had a serious season i dont know the answer yet, ok i have all my pairs planned out, right now, and im wondering if i were to put the birds together and later come back later how do i know they paired up? like if i left them alone in a huge space over night, how do i know they paired up the next day?

and another question,

is it harder to pair a bb to a white then

a bb to a bb? is its the same difficulty?

and how long does it usualy take for a hen to accept the cock?

and out of 10 how often would u say a pair does not work out?

If all birds are running together,a natural selection process will occur with the most dominant cock mating to the most forward hen and so on.

No problem re these, with mating its a sexual attraction not colour

Abut 4 out of ten

As In Humans if the sexes have been split for a while they doint care about colour etc. shut your desired pairs in the nest box together and only let them out a pair at a time for a while, they will soon become lovers and learn where their box is, then you will see if your homework was a master stroke or not. I keep my pairs seperate like this till the second egg is laid so parentage is guarenteed

i know someone who opens the door and lets them pick there own partners

he wins quite a lot

i think iam pairing tomorrow or wednesday

thats what I done the last 2 years and won most young bird races 1st year and most old bird races year after never raced the youngsters last year due to nature

as mentioned in previous thread, I find the following the best way to match pairs and get them going at the same time:-

Split the cock and hens into 2 sections ...allow the cocks to settle and take a nest box of their own.......when the said cock is roosting and defending his box...pen the chosen hen in one side for a week..feed her and water her in there.

If after a week, if it seems as though they have taken to each other....reverse the proceedure....and lock the cock in one side of his box.

If the hen as taken to the cock she will return back to the 'said' nest box to be with him...after a coupl of days....pen them in together and wait the the magic to happen  ;D

ok i will try some of your ideas, i was told by another guy to, put the 2 birds i want to be together in a large space, till they are mated then saparate them again till i have done this to all my pairs, at the breeding season put them in their boxes locked up, and hopefully they will remeber their mates and accept them again, then let the pairs out of the box 1 pair at a time so they get used to the boxes and all your eggs will come along the same 9 or 10 days later,

the guy has used this way for 30 years and hes unbeatable, over 50% of the top 25% birds are his,

That is the general idea......come semptember the cocks and hens are split into 2 section.

then you can decide during the moulting period what birds have done what and selectively put good to good..or what ever....

The simulataneous putting together of your pairs should in theory allow them to pair , lay, hatch, and wean a round off at relively the same time....

this is a must if breeding a YB racing team......or indeed 2 teams to race with....no good having a natural loft if you're racing as young will be cracked off willy nilly, with no real organisination .....birds will all differnt ages.....traingin will be difficult as a result..

No different to how I do it only I tease my birds and get them furstrated...this way when you put them together tney are more incline dto get on with the business of breeding than sitting pretty...looking out of the stock loft

Its these similar incentives that are applied by racing men to gear their birds to come home quicker from a race...whether it be to a nest full of babbies..(natural)...or to a hen / cock in a box......widowhood

Its no special formula Mg.........just a way of getting orgainsed...and making as little work as yourself as you can;) ;):)

oh cool

i will try but i mate up mid febuary, so i have to wait, but i know who will be mated with who, i have a few empty sections so i was thinking of just letting the 2 birds in that section alone, might work
