Roamer1 Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 I want to ask this interesting and very complicated question. It will be 2008 breeding season in my country and I don't know how to pair my pigeons. I know that one theory said quality with quality. It is more chances to breed good pigeons. But what other criters do you use in your loft? Pair big hen with small cock. Pair big hen with dark eyes with light-colourated eyes cock. Pair young hen with old cock... Please tell me something about breeding in your loft. Maybe you know interesting article about that or something like that. Thanks for answers. P.S. How to increase my chances to breed good pigeons...
Guest cloudview Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 looking at them photo,s ; if of coarse they are yours itlooks like your doing ok
Roamer1 Posted February 17, 2008 Author Report Posted February 17, 2008 looking at them photo,s ; if of coarse they are yours itlooks like your doing ok Yes it is my racing pigeons. Cloudview what do you do when you pair pigeons?
Guest cloudview Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 the race team i mostly let them pick there own ; and its surprising when you go round to see whats gone together , i often think icould,nt have picked them better myself . regarding stud birds ipersonally don,t have any ex tremes , i e short, long deep shallow birds they are all of asimilar type , reason being if i bring any new stock in they have to be what ilike in a pigeon as an example i don,t like deep keeled , short birds the sprint fanciers might disagree on that note so in answer to your question breed to to type that suits your racing preference
jimbobboy Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 Just put my late hatch OBs together and let them pair themselves. Breeder/stock birds try to keep them the way I want them!! Always try to breed the Best to Best!!!!! Rule of thumb. I usually don't go by eye sign however I do look for a good eye sign!!! jimbobboy
chickadee Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 Nice birds, I like the look of the second one down.

How to increase my chances to breed good pigeons... Roamer1 !!!!!, It really is not all that complicated in my view, only if you wish to make it that way etc, like some people do for their own reasons. Just a few pointers for you to ponder over, I'm quite sure others will give you more excellant advise etc. You are very fortunate today, in fact very fortunate etc. Because you have the internet at your disposal & it's a wonderful wonderful thing to learn by, not just for pigeons etc, but anything in general that may take your fancy, & something that many of us here did not have until recent times so to speak. Pigeons need not be racing fit to breed etc, but they must be healthy 100%+ to gain the best out of them & 3 or 4 rounds should have no effect on there condition. Never let your stock loft, become an old peoples home (Old pigeons) etc, as much as us old folk here, may like to think we are as good as we were, when we were young we ain't ;D ;D ;D. So always have youth on your side (stock loft) & you will be much better off in the long run. Decide at the start, whether you prefer short, middle or long distance racing & mate accordingly & be very wary of big pigeons as such.(not my cup of tea). Being new to this sport, Study your pedigrees if you have them for your birds, they can be of great help to a new comer like yourself, as a starter. Here is the "Cracker" to the puzzle ;D ;D ;D study the eye, its a wonderful part of the pigeon etc (No not eye sign, that's crap ;D ;D ;D) but the eye, different families have different coloured eyes so to speak & I much prefer to mate birds with different coloured eyes together, I like it that way . Now !!!! I have no time for pigeons with large pupils as such & I think you would be wise to do the same & attempt to breed pigeons with small pupils etc & the outer circle rim a fine line & the darker the better in my view, my good mate may advise otherwise to you. But always remember !!!!! no matter which advise/theory at times you may receive & use. Dont try & make it more complicated than it really needs to be, it will make you old & grumpy, very quickly, & take the enjoyment factor away from the sport, which is very important to me, & many others here, thou some may differ to me here, on this aspect. To me a pigeon is like a clock!!!!!! in simple terms ;D ;D ;D it has many moving parts to it, some may appear ????? more important than others so to speak, but to gain the best out of it (correct time) all parts must work in harmony with one another, exactly like a pigeon the way I see it. "But then " I'm only a simple man, & not to bright by some standards, of some people here :P . Always feed the best grain that you can obtain in your area, & as a rough guide 45% protein mix for breeding 25% protein mix for moulting & 15% protein mix for racing & you shouldn't go to far astray. well at least not in my view. Thats enough for me now, lets just see what other people may have to say. Enjoy.

How to increase my chances to breed good pigeons... Hi Roamer, seems to me as though you are doing ok on your own my friend. The photos show some really class birds, (particularly like the Cempion Cheq Cock No.1). To be truthfull, you sound as though you are already breeding for balance, large to small, etc. As with the eyes, I don't put the same type of eyes together, I try to put opposite colours together as much as possible and tend to stay away from Pearl to Pearl altogether. I know this has worked for others, but I have tried it and not had the successes that i've enjoyed when practising the colour clashing method. I use the base bloodlines as a guide also, if i have two bloodlines that have clicked particularly well, then i try to put as many pairings of that type together as possible. Whilst also using all the other factors, balance, eyes, type, etc. As i said, it seems by the quality of birds you have, that you are doing things right anyway Roamer, so my only advice to you would be simply this, whatever methods and/or theories are working for you, stick with them, but don't close your mind to others that may benefit you. Keep an open mind my friend, and don't let people "talk" you into their beliefs, or out of yours that are working!!
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 JMO when i pair i look for simular things the birds have! but only in a few birds! but i try putting a large cock with a small hen, or two birds with the same strain, last year i let my birds choose their own partners! it turned out reALLY good,
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 I try to put type to type in the stock loft and let them pair on their own in the race loft if I get any good birds from racing loft then I will pair relatives together and inbreed these lines and then race those birds as outcrosses
Roamer1 Posted February 20, 2008 Author Report Posted February 20, 2008 Thanks for reply for everyone. In especial Cloudview, Lennut Tar, Dicky Darky. It is simple to leave pair for nature when you have tested racing pigeons team. But when pigeons is from different strain and etc. then I don't want to leave pair for them themselves. Maybe will be more suggestions how to pair racing pigeons? What do you think about old pigeons youngsters? They are equaly for young pigeons youngsters, or not?

It will take you a couple of breeding sesons at least to establish which birds are breeding the winners, that's why if you do nothing else you must keep detailed records of your breeding. You can learn alot from older pigeons and they will look after you as they have the experience,I generally pair older pigeons to younger mates, good luck
