Hi... What should I do to recover my pigeon and get them ready for the next race after a long smash race?

First !!!!!!, what is a long smash race in your opinion, in your view ???????. "For me", forget about it etc, if your talking about a long distance race 500 miles plus. The body may appear ok to you ???????? after a few days etc. But the head & the heart will be gone 99 times out of 100 in my view, so much better to put them away till next year, & let them recover 100%, with a complete rest so to speak, so they can fight another day.

Enjoy.

Here in the philippines.. our race here always have 4-6 laps. For ex. first 200 miles, 2nd 250 miles, 3rd 300 and so on... basketing is done during friday night. and release of the birds were on sunday... so my question is; what if my bird returned from race(1st lap), what is the best thing to do in order for my pigeon to be on its optimum condition for the next lap? no worries mate... :)

Its a complex question you ask valteng as each pigeon will be different. The race may have been from 200 mile but how many miles has the pigeon flown in reality? could be x4 or x5 that distance. If the pigeon has called on all its reserves and has wasted muscle you could be looking at 4-6 week minimum. Firstly the pigeon will need time to cleanse itself of the lactic acid build up before you start to build it up again. Feed non fatty light feed for the first 3-4 days as to not over burden the digestive tract, liver & kidneys. I would then gradually introduce heavier grain (50% barley 50% heavy mix)with brewers yeast added to it, nothing but plain drinking water. Once the pigeon has regained its weight and its dropping have returned to small & solid with down falling don’t be fooled into thinking its ok, you will have to observe its behaviour and wait for the pigeon to tell you its right. The pigeon will now need its confidence built back up now, a few short tosses on easy days will help.

Also a pigeon flown on widowhood/celibacy will recover quicker that a pigeon flown on the natural system

AAAAAHHHHHHaaaaaaa  ;D ;D ;D Now where beginning to understand your situation a wee bit better  ;) ;) ;) Not quite long distance smash races etc  :) :) :) But where in tune now, one could say ??????????  :P :P :P. Tony C's advise sounds pretty good to me for starters, & never forget now !!!!!!! etc, every pigeon is different in there own way/manner as we say. So now !!!!!!, have fun  :X :X :X working them out in regards to the way you treat them.

Enjoy.

this is an excellent post , valteng,[from tony c ] i would maybe add that its hours on the wing , and not distance [tony,s more or less explained that in a different way ] but maybe explain it this way valtang , ,,,a bird flying ,say 180  miles in 3 hours [velocity 1760  or 60 miles per hour]]would take less recouperating time , than a bird flying 180 miles in say,6 hours hours[ velocity 880  or 30 miles per hour] this could be due to different weather conditions etc ,,,,,,,,,,,i have made this mistake before with the bird looking ok , but its the acting ok that counts , as tony" says the bird will tell you" meaning its full of confidence ,flying well around the loft, bouncing with condition and life, and looking as though its enjoyimg life to the full :)  sent before all this ,could well ruin a good bird , and learn it bad habits ,, home rather than race :)   good luck valtang [philapines :)] look forward to seeing your posts , as to your ways, and methods and the type of pigeon  you fly  :) :)

yup yup... that's nice to hear Lennut Tar... because pigeon racing should be a continous process.. it should be a cycle of learning and improvement, giving ang sharing... when you race and win.. its should not stop there..:):):) instead its a new thing to work on... its a responsibility... have a nice day mate..
