You pay attention to the birds for long enough, they will tell you, you must always send the first ones back (form pigeons) from the previos race, the last one's home may have a rest for 1/2/3 weeks or go in the bin.

I am allowed 20 birds per team.

How many would you send back of the 40 sent in your quote:( first ones ) ?

Start at the other end skull, decide first which ones aren't going to go. Leave out any latecomers from last weeks race, they'll benefit from a weeks rest and a short training toss or two. Leave out hens that are eggy, yearling cocks that are driving. Leave out anything that has a new flight just bursting through. Handle what’s left, anything loose or dry in the feather stays at home and so on and so on.

Skull,

not easy to get over (explain) the birds that return showing signs of effort, pigeons that are keen to enter loft, birds that show signs of giving all the enegy to get home fast, these same birds need to recover quickly also, birds that look dull & tired need keeping an eye on, spend a bit of time watching them, you will get to know when they are tired or bubbling, they show you in many different ways, once you know them as individuals it gets easier.

I have 3 teams of diferent age young birds. I have trained the first team (14) upto 40 miles, and they are doing great. The second team (14) have had 3 tosses from 8 mile. The third team (36) are just finding there wings around the loft and being weaned off. I plan to send the first team right from the first race. In our fed we have 2 races from swindon (76 miles to me), then 3 Newbury (97 miles to me), so plan to stick the 2nd team into the 2nd or 3rd Newbury. I will then send both teams to Epsom (141), Maidstone (176 miles). Depending on numbers I will pick out a few birds that I will put away for next year. But having the 36 in reserve I need to be careful I dont end up with too many. Lillers (272 miles) is the furthest race for me in the fed and I will select several of my birds to send to this.
