Guest Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 doesnt mean you will get great middle distance infact doesnt mean you will get great anything if the breeding stock isnt the best you could waste alot of time but some of the great distance men sometime put a sprint/middle distance through there birds to increase the speed but only the best and under strict rules
john nico Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 a good pigeon can win from 90 miles up 2 500 miles sprinter or distance bird
Guest Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 only breed so many and test very hard never run too much through the loft and they must be at least as good as your own best proven good distance birds 3/4 year test

Guest Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 bertie camphuis strain has extreme distance crossed through it!!
holmsidelofts Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 If you know anything about genetics theres no such thing as an all round family, Sprinters have a body shape that differs from that of a distance pigeon. This was discussed by Steven van breeman who is one of the top fanciers of holland and who is an expert on pigeon genetics. Think of it this way, linford christie was one of the fasted men on earth in his time at the 100 meters but wouldnt come anywhere in a marathon due to his physical shape, it doesnt mean was was a bad athlete it was just that his genetic makeup made him fantastic at that distance. All you get when you pair sprinters with distance pigeons is you get slower sprinters and birds that cant fly the distance. You take any of the world class flyers they always have different families of birds for different distances thats the only way to be successful week in week out against strong competition, you can get the odd bird that will win out of turn but not against strong competition. Just remember horses for courses.
Guest Hjaltland Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 Just remember horses for courses. Yup... try crossing a Shetland pony with a thoroughbred steeplechaser..
thunderboult Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 If i was to cross a sprinter with an extreme distance bird what would the outcome be would i get a middle distance bird out of them? could be anything good/bad, short/middle/long. it won't harm to try with a pair or two. i've tried it myself with a couple of pairs and all have produced tidy racers scoring upto 420 mls .
blaz Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 i know a fancier who tried this distance to sprint.he bred a hen that i know off called 69 she topped the fed out of the yb national she topped the fed at an other race not sure whare .she also bred birds to top the fed.
