Hi All

Lets say a novice approach you asking for advice. What is the 2 moste important things you would tell him to look out for / do when starting as novice/newby. Let limit (if you want) the advice to two items per member, and try not to repeat what was already said.

Lets then see if we can 'agree to disagree' on the maybe 10 most important things to look out for/do, and perhaps we would be 'indirectly' reminding ourself of things we know, but forgot.

My advice would be:

1-Never over-populate your loft

2-Write down day-by-day what you do with birds, and also what you give them, thus keep record.

youve mentioned already one of the best (overcrowding)  so my first would be routine. and the second good birds from one scource. thats the advice i would give a novice ,(thats also from experience). andy.

Hi Andy

I agree about good birds, FROM ONE PERSON, as then the novice can also obtain the training program on which those birds perform from the same flyer, and saves alot of time and money by not having to figure it out himself.

Hi Soapy

I suggested only two as it must be the most important, and that way we can compile 'golden rules' and not just 'rules. You can mention more, was just a suggestion to mention only 2. What is acat box (i am in South Africa, dont know the term/product?) Regards, Old Pied

Hi owen

Can we perhaps combine your 'rule' (find a system that suits the person) with Andys rule that novice should obtain birds from one person. Perhaps we can say that a novice must look for fancier whose system will suit him/her (time and money), and if this person is racing well, one should 'earmark' such a person to obtain round of youngsters from?

Just a suggestion

For tameness, design your loft so that there are no big open spaces within it. Get the birds to walk between sections, rather than fly (they can fly all they like outside it). Have no bird perched higher than your own eye-level, and don't have room above your head that they can fly up and into, to avoid you..

Get the birds confident in you. Spend a lot of time with them. Move slowly when amongst them. Speak to them, get them used to you and your voice.

1, find out who best flyer is in your area and approach them for help and advice (mentor)

2, spend as much time with your birds as you can, watch them, learn there habits and what makes them tick.

go to the local flyers that have achieved the distances you intend to race and get as close to the birds as you can afford they might even gift you birds from the stock you are after

Be Very Tough, do not keep rubbish

Do not treat at the drop of a hat, allow them to build up immunity.

Sound advice!

Only problem with point 1 is that here in South Africa they cant be trusted, as you are competition, which is fierce!

1.I would rather say the best flyer who you wont compete against in another area.

2.Try and keep young birds of the same age in one loft.
