pigeonman007 Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Hi all, I am interested to hear how people train their young birds for long distance racing. I am hoping to join the BICC next year and take part in a couple of the shorter chanel races with my yearlings and hopefully build up a team of distance based birds to compete in the longer BICC races over the next few years. What I would like to know is if it is neccessary to club race my young birds for their experience or if I should just train them regularly. I am not on darkness and would be entering natural youngsters which I have been told wont stand a chance against darkness youngsters. I am not worried in the slightest if they would compete for top positions or not, it would simply be a training process for them. However, I have been also been advised though that club/corridor racing would not really be of a great deal of benefit to them and I should train regularly and in any direction upto 20miles as young birds and then straight into some of the shorter chanel races next season. Thank you for reading
Wiley Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 myself personally if i was distance minded would race my youngsters natural, and give them as much was racing as their moult allowed
peterpau Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 You must have been told exactly right. I have natural young 'uns out to 280 mile and managed 57 National as one of the longest flying birds on the sheet. You need to have your birds fit and healthy : Loft management for this one. They must be used to being on a transporter and racing from one : Club flying is fine. My old uns have had a couple o' 10 milers and will go in to racing at 122 mile about 6 or 8 inland and may be a short channel race 280/330 mile then out to Tarbes 634 mile. My young uns will have 8/10 chucks at 10 mile and in to racing may be 6 races then over the water at 280 mile BBC. Later bred young uns will not be falling apart cos they will be too young. They'll come for me.
pigeonman007 Posted April 13, 2010 Author Report Posted April 13, 2010 Hi Peter I See where you are coming from with all the points above and they do make a great deal of sense to me I did think that the later bred youngsters would not be so far into the moult and could take the place of the earlier ones that were moulting, so no need for the darkness really. I've a lot to learn with regards to distance flying and dont expect it to be easy, I'm sure it will be a lot of fun though
peterpau Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Mate I'm no great flyer. I do get good returns at the real distance 500 miles+ My last line is "they'll come for me" I know they will, and I expect to clock at 500+ I aint set the world on fire but then I only have 6 pairs of racers, so expecting to clock at Tarbes international is some thing I feel quite proud and confident about. I started the season a couple o' years ago with 3 cocks I broke from my old loft. My target race was Palamos 750 miles. 1 was hawked the week prior to basketing sent two and got 1 but out of race time. Again that's a fair achievement from 3. Tiz just my opinion.
