Guest IB Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 i noticed a few of the birds holding corn back What does that mean? I am a beginner, sorry if it seems obvious Hi there. Yes, can see that the term would confuse ~ 'holding corn' means that the birds crop always feels full. Normally, food is held in the crop for a shortish time until it softens (water) then the crop starts to empty as the softened grain is moved into the stomach & gizzard. Due to an upset of some kind further down the digestive tract, the system 'shuts down' and the food is held in the crop where it basically goes sour and causes imflammation of the crop. Thats usually the first sign of a problem, the second is when the birds begin to vomit that food. If other birds eat it, the infection can be passed on to them.

rasbull Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 I have just had YBS and shringed 5ml of soda crystals down there throats. Then 1/2 hour later give them a charcoal tablet. Nothing to eat then for 24 hours. I then fed 1/4oz per bird conditioner the following morning. The next day it was 1/2 oz and then started introducing the young bird mix back in. I let them out yesterday for the 1st time in 2 weeks and today they flew for over an hour. I tried that Adenosan but didnt think it did a lot at all. Follow the steps above the YBS will be gone in no time!
Guest strapper Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 try medicating with belgamco will be gone in under a week or so....in the homing world...paul smith.belgica de weerdt or xerek by bilco. or one or two others..all will get them over it in under a week. remove all vits/minerals and grit. feed light..dupuritive is fine. when treatment is finnished treat with multi vits..for 3 days. then again after 6 days.
